What’s more, the bar boasts some excellent locals. The popular late Constantin who lived in the local Schloss was a frequent visitor, and now the bar is filled with world-class show jumpers and friends of the count.

The wooded parkland of the hotel and the neighbouring grand Schloss Surenburg provide a backdrop that you can explore on foot, on a bicycle or on a horse.

One distinguishing factor is that the hotel is a centre for equestrian pursuits - its grounds host a world-class show-jumping ring and training centre - and riders can rest there along the enchanting new Muensterland riding route spanning the whole country. Attention to detail in the rooms ensured that your stay will be filled with comfort and ease - a typically thoughtful touch was in the ‘beach bag’ provided for guests wanting to use the luxurious bathhouse facilities, including a salt sauna, steam room and indoor pool with countercurrents.

The in-house Michelin-starred restaurant offers sophisticated, seasonal fare which draws on regional products including herbs from the gardens, and game from the Heermans’che forest. On our visit, the truffled dumplings which are served alongside the loin of lamb were a true standout: the luxury of the highest standard. Coupled with a Primitivo ‘Di Manduria’ 66 Reserva from Sardinia, we thought this main course was one of the best we’ve ever tasted. After your meal, you may find yourself mingling with the equestrian elite or the local nobility in the cosy President’s bar. Elegant and understated, yet full of surprises - this hotel was a destination to remember.
