The Review
On descending the sun-basked steps of the Santorini Secret Suites, I challenge you not to stop and stare. Stretching towards the horizon and demanding your attention is a breathtaking vista that is only enriched by the dramatic history that lies beneath the surface. Literally. Some 3600 years ago, at the height of the Minoan empire, the largest volcanic eruption in written history plunged the island into the sea, forming a crater 3000 meters deep. Nestled in niches that cascade down the edge of the caldera are the 17 suites that form this unique hotel.
Reluctantly dragging our attention away from the view, we were greeted by the charming manager, Marina. Although relatively new to the hotel, she was bursting with a catching enthusiasm for all that that Santorini and the hotel itself had to offer.
Each of the individually decorated suites is a harmonious blend of the old and new, bringing together local and volcanic materials with crisp modern design. They all boast a private veranda with either a private infinity pool or jacuzzi and a fabulous caldera view. However, the larger communal infinity pool is not to be missed. The view makes it seem as if you're swimming out into a thousand miles of perfect blue, whilst the incredibly thoughtful barman Manos will concoct you a drink to die for.
The hotel is set in the sought after area of Oia, a postcard-perfect village renowned for its sunsets, exquisite galleries and wide range of shops. As the evening set in, we joined in the mass exodus to the Castle of Oia, said to be the best sunset sighting spot. The view was truly stunning, even when drowning in a sea of selfie sticks.
Returning to the tranquillity of the hotel, we took our seats at the hotel restaurant Oozura. We began with a refreshing but it must be said pleasurably potent cocktail. The innovative drinks menu follows a Japanese-Peruvian theme, with cocktails based on sake or pisco.
Food menu
And as the nighttime chill set in, the attentive staff were quick to offer shawls and patio heaters, ensuring we enjoyed our meal in the utmost comfort.
Also served on the terrace of Oozura, the breakfast is simple yet satisfying. Select any items from their extensive menu, from omelettes to local cheeses; thick Greek yoghurt to fresh fruit salads, and they will be brought fresh to your table. All washed down with a delicious iced latte, this made for a pleasing start to the day.
Had we had more time.
