Origins
The existing building dates back to 1865, but astonishingly, there has been an inn on this site since the late sixteenth century. Now, the hotel is under the ownership of Grosvenor Estate and run by the very capable hands of Bespoke Hotels.
Top Secret
Bag a room on the hotels street-facing front to have views pf Chester’s ornate Eastgate clock. If your room is on the top floor, you may be able to see the famous cathedral, which looks a treat at night.
The Review
The hotel’s traditional tone is set before you enter, greeted as you are by an impeccably dressed doorman. The staff are warm and attentive, proud to tell you all about their city and its best spots. The décor is one of a classic hotel; you won’t find any breaking-the-mold design, but it is all in keeping with the 19th century Grade II listed building that houses the hotel. Up the stairs, wrapping around a 28,000-piece chandelier, you are led to your room. The rooms vary in design and size, with deep, thick-set baths in many and serenely comfortable beds in all.
Waking refreshed, you will find yourself a stone’s throw from the city’s Eastgate, where you can climb its steps directly on to the city walls, leading you to various walking routes and city sights. When your feet are tired, let them carry you back to the hotel’s intimate spa. Lights are ever so soft, with warm yellows in the relaxation area; it is a great place to let the complimentary serums and moisturisers do their work. The spa’s Thermal Suite boasts a herb sauna, themed showers, ice fountain, crystal steam room, salt grotto and foot baths for those tired feed.
Make sure you book a table at the sought-after dining destination, Simon Radley, within the hotel, before you arrive to avoid missing out to the waiting list. You will be treated to a host of well thought out and beautifully executed dishes. Local products are the stars of Radley’s delicately balanced plates. British foodies have had a Chester pin in the maps for a while, now the hotel’s chief restaurant, holding a Michelin Star since 1990.
