Origins
When Otto Syrowatka came across a slice of land overlooking the Valley of the Kings in 2002, he knew he’d found an opportunity too fruitful to pass. On only his second trip to Bali, and with no background in hospitality, he snapped up the plot and built 11 villas, soon followed by a further 14. The hotel remains a family business, and the younger Syrowatkas have inherited their father’s skill and desire to create a top-class destination.
Top Secret
The traditional ‘Balinese massage’ is the most popular treatment at the hotel’s Spa, it requires a secret village technique that has been practised for centuries by members of the community to help relieve muscle pain caused by working long and hard hours in the rice fields. This endearing massage relaxes weary muscles and is ideal for stiff backs after long-haul flights.
The Review
Home to one of Bali’s top dining destinations, the ‘CasCades’ restaurant draws in guests to The Viceroy on the strength of the food alone and is proud to regularly host Michelin starred chefs that keep the in-house team on the very tip of their creative toes. The dining experience is a visual treat, with tables overlooking the lush greenery of the valley below, from which a warm gentle breeze provides the perfect palate cleanser. Despite harsh Balinese import tariffs, The Viceroy boasts a world-class wine and spirits list, and the cocktails that shimmer in beautiful glassware at the bar are no less delightful served poolside with a straw.
The resort is well known by sophisticated international travellers as one of the world’s best secret tropical hideaways and this is easy to understand. The hotel prides itself on being a destination that places emphasis on the best of privacy and comfort. The pool itself perches at the tip of the valley, seemingly cascading all the way to the bottom. Each room meanwhile, is built into the valley-side and is accompanied by a private pool and individual raised balé. Service is wonderful, with the majority of staff originating from the nearby town, famed for the warmth and sincerity of the local people. Innumerable experiences can be conjured up at minimal notice and minimal fuss, from bird watching to volcano trekking, all the way to helicopter tours of the verdant countryside
