Top Secret

The medieval Abbey which is less than an hour’s walk from the lighthouse is generally locked but you can ask for the key at the post office next door and they will lend it to you

The Review

The delightful journey begins with a 20 minutes boat ride across the Atlantic Ocean, leading you to Clare Island. Whilst a fresh wind gently caresses your skin, you will be able to distinguish the lighthouse from the pier and enjoy the fantastic views on the Island. If you're lucky, you might be escorted by dolphins and seals along the way.

Once you have reached the unspoiled island, you will be taken for a quick drive through the mountains to the top of the island where this magnificent 200-year-old lighthouse proudly stands. After a warm welcome by Tricia and her very friendly smile, you will have the privilege to meet her husband Richard who is the Lighthouse chef. Tricia and Richard are responsible for the day to day running of the Lighthouse. You will be invited to enjoy a pre-dinner drink with the other guests. It's a great opportunity to sit back and relax in comfortable sofas near an open turf fire and an opportunity get to know each other whilst soaking up the ambience and atmosphere.

As you genuinely start to feel at home, Tricia will come and explain the six-course dinner menu that’s on offer. The chef uses high quality and locally sourced ingredients, making the food a real highlight of the stay. Dinner is served on a beautiful Irish Georgian mahogany table in the dining room where all the guests dine together.

After a quiet and peaceful night, you 'll be energized and ready to explore Clare Island’s rich heritage, landscape and history, either by foot or bike. With its 120-meters-high cliffs, its mountains with the remainder of the winter snows and surrounded by the azur blue yet agitated sea, you'll be looking at one of the most spectacular landscapes across Europe. The well-preserved medieval abbey which fits snugly into the wild nature of the island, is a perfect addition to those gorgeous views. The ancient 13th century fresco paintings on the abbey ceiling suggest the place is full of secrets waiting to be unveiled, as well as emphasizing the enigmatic beauty of Clare Island.
