Origins
Sukau Rainforest Lodge was built in 1995, designed to encourage the key principles of ecotourism – conservation, community development and sustainability – as well as to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for visitors.
Top Secret
Getting the boat to the lodge takes a little longer than driving, but affords the possibility to spot some of Borneo’s beautiful and rare species from the waters of the Kinabatangan River – look out for orangutans, probosci's monkeys and pygmy elephants.
The Review
The Sukau Rainforest Lodge sits directly on the banks of the Kinabatangan River, one of Asia’s most important and ecologically vibrant waterways, in the heart of the Borneo jungle. A charter member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, which has even been visited by Sir David Attenborough himself, this is a striking setting with impeccable eco-credentials. The lodge practices carbon offsetting, working with local non-profits and using sustainable methods such as rainwater-harvested showers and solar heating in the day-to-day – meaning guests can learn about and support the ecosystem without forfeiting any sense of luxury or comfort.
The natural world is the key draw here, with a location that enhances visitors’ chances of spotting some of the rarest and most beautiful wild creatures of the Borneo rainforest. If you’re lucky you might spot orangutans on the Hornbill Boardwalk at the back of the lodge. Alternatively, one of Sukau’s famous tour’s allows the opportunity to look out for crocodiles, elephants, monkeys and sun bears, across local habitats ranging from limestones forests to swamps.
Rooms are decorated in a rustic-chic style that reflects the sights and sounds of the surrounding jungle, with plenty of natural materials and wide windows to let in the light. An on-site restaurant overlooks the waters of the Kinabatangan, while an outdoor pool offers the perfect spot to unwind and beat the heat. Make sure to head to the Ape Gallery information centre – nightly educational talks provide a fascinating insight into the work of the lodge and its partners.
