Origins
The partners of the Torel Group are on a mission to express the story of Portugal. Their three other properties in the country tell the tales of Portugal’s kings and queens, writers and explorers, respectively. When it came to Porto, they wanted to create a homage to art. Torel Avantgarde is dedicated to Porto’s own artisans, artists and designers, featuring them amongst the greats. Even the hotel’s building itself was chosen because it dates to the ‘New-State’ period in the 1940s.
Top Secret
Two love stories are told within the halls of Torel Avantgarde: between Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, and Peggy Guggenheim and Max Ernst. Rivera’s and Kahlo’s rooms are placed side-by-side, as are Guggenheim’s and Ernst’s. There are little cues to one another in the rooms, as if they are in conversation.
The Review
The avantgarde is defined by cutting-edge aesthetics and radical experimentation. So it is fitting that Torel Avantgarde brings together unexpected elements to create a stand-out experience.
One step into the art-adorned lobby and you’ll know this hotel is all about the details. Like hand-hammered studs along with each leather door, and interpretations of Rabelo boats as wallpaper.
Beyond the lobby, you’ll find the exquisite ‘Flower Room’ of plush red sofas and flowers cascading from the ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows. A peek around the corner reveals Torel’s sumptuous infinity pool and nearby loungers, all of which look down upon the twinkling Duoro River. For even more indulgence, an expansive spa menu offers everything from anti-ageing facials to lymphatic massages, all performed in a plush spa suite. For the disciplined ones, there’s an equally swanky gym.
Named after the inventor of the wine bottle, Torel Avantgarde’s house restaurant ‘Digby’ keeps the Port flowing. A well-stocked bar welcomes you into Digby’s sprawling seating area, but keep walking to enjoy the real treat: the glass cellar packed with offerings, which looks like an art installation in itself. The restaurant’s terrace packs in nearly panoramic views of the city—an excuse to luxuriate in the excellent food, from couvert to dessert.
The rooms are where Torel Avantgarde shines beyond compare. Each is inspired by a different avantgarde figure of art, culture or innovation, every detail feels like an expression of its artist, and no piece of furniture in any room is the same. Expect lovely toiletries, intriguing snacks and an outrageously comfortable bed.
The quick 15-minute stroll into the heart of Porto is not to be missed. But you’ll be delighted each evening to return to Torel Avantgarde’s love letter to avantgarde art, to Porto, and to its guests.
