Introducing Myanmar
Traditional in spirit, Myanmar is moving gently into the 21st century. But you’ll still see horses pulling carts, and the vintage steamer taking tourists downriver. It remains a deeply spiritual country, which is predominantly Buddhist, with some fantastically decorated monuments – the Shwedagon Paya is famously decked out in 27 tonnes of gold leaf. In Bagan, you can’t miss the huge 12th-century temple, which rears in golden glory (despite its legendary bad karma) above the city. Enjoy boggling at the temples and ruins which are literally all over Myanmar, and rest your weary feet at the pampering luxury hotels on our list.
