Introducing Raa Atoll

Raa sits in the northern Maldives, just above Baa, and lives a little in its neighbour's shadow. Baa took the UNESCO Biosphere status and the manta crowds; Raa kept the quiet. It is one of the larger and deeper atolls in the country, a long spread of reef and lagoon that stayed off the main tourist track until relatively recently, and still feels less worked-over than the atolls nearer Malé.

What it offers is range rather than a single headline. Raa's reefs are healthy and varied, its channels good for diving, and the same monsoon currents that fill Baa's Hanifaru push manta and whale-shark activity up into Raa waters in season too, without the permits and daily caps. The result is much of the wildlife appeal of its famous neighbour, with more room on the water.

The resorts reflect that breadth. Raa carries everything from honest four-star eco islands to some of the country's most expensive wellness retreats, which makes it one of the few atolls where the choice is genuinely about budget and style rather than a fixed tier. The airport at Dharavandhoo, in Baa, and seaplane routes from Malé keep it within comfortable reach, a little further than the central atolls but not remote in the way the far north can be.

Where to Stay in Raa Atoll

Raa's resorts are spread along its reefs rather than clustered, so the choice is less about location than about the kind of stay you want. At the value end, on the private island of Filaidhoo, Reethi Faru Resort is an owner-run eco resort on a green former-plantation island, where the house reef starts a step off the sand and the conservation programme is the real draw rather than a marketing line. It suits travellers who want a genuine reef and serious ecological intent without the top-tier bill, and stands as proof that Raa pays off when you look past the headline names. At the other end of the atoll's range sit several of the country's most expensive wellness and design resorts, so Raa lets you set the budget rather than the other way round.

When to Go

Raa runs on the same two seasons as the rest of the Maldives. December to April is the dry northeast monsoon, with the calmest seas, clearest water and highest demand. May to November is wetter and windier but quieter and better value, and brings the manta and whale-shark activity that drifts up from Baa's waters in those months. Diving is good year-round, so a wet-season week still earns its keep below the surface.

Getting There

Most guests fly into Malé, then take a seaplane straight to the resort, roughly 40 to 45 minutes and daylight only. The alternative is a short domestic flight to Dharavandhoo, the airport that serves both Baa and southern Raa, followed by a speedboat to the island; that route operates after dark and tends to cost less, which suits late international arrivals or anyone wary of a small seaplane.
