The South: Beaches, Surf and Clifftops
Bali divides, roughly, into three: the busy south, the cultural centre around Ubud, and the quieter highlands and east. Where you stay shapes the trip more than the hotel itself, so it pays to choose the region first.
The south is Bali at its most energetic — beaches, surf breaks, restaurants and the island's only airport. In Seminyak, The One Boutique Villa is a tiny heritage-compound of six villas built on the traditional Balinese house plan, while Bliss Sanctuary for Women is a small, restful women-only wellness stay. Nearby Canggu, the surf-and-yoga village, is home to Escape Haven, a larger, activity-led women-only wellness stay built around surf, yoga and fitness programmes. On the Bukit clifftops at Uluwatu, Hidden Hills Villas is a family-owned resort of individually country-themed villas with 180-degree ocean views. The Sanur and Nusa Dua beach areas hold three more: Kayumanis Nusa Dua, an adults-only gated villa enclave; Kayumanis Sanur, the smallest and most family-minded of the Kayumanis quartet; and The Pavilions Bali, a romantic, good-value garden resort. Down at Jimbaran, on a former coconut grove near the seafood-grill beach, Kayumanis Jimbaran completes the group's island foursome.
