Introducing Urgup

Ürgüp is one of the main towns of Cappadocia and, for many, the most appealing base in the region. Set on the eastern side of the valley country in central Turkey, it is larger and more lived-in than the tourist-heavy villages nearby, an old wine town of honey-coloured stone houses climbing the hillsides, with proper restaurants, hammams and a weekly market alongside the cave hotels.

The setting is pure Cappadocia. Ürgüp sits among the same surreal landscape of fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches and soft volcanic ridges, with the Three Graces, a trio of capped pinnacles on the edge of town, among its emblems. Above the centre rises Temenni hill, with sweeping views over the rooftops and valleys, and the same dawn balloons that drift over the whole region rise here too.

Around the town lie some of Cappadocia's most absorbing corners. The quiet village of Ortahisar and its towering rock castle sit just to the west; the wineries that have worked these volcanic soils for centuries open their doors for tastings; and the walking valleys, underground cities and the great open-air museum at Göreme are all within easy reach. Ürgüp makes a calm, characterful place to take it all in.

Where to Stay in Ürgüp

The Ürgüp area spreads across the town itself and the smaller villages around it, and the choice of base sets the tone. Ürgüp town has the most life, restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance, while nearby Ortahisar is quieter and more traditional, a working village gathered below its rock castle. The way to stay, as across Cappadocia, is in a cave hotel. The club's choice sits in Ortahisar. Hezen Cave Hotel is a 19-room cave hotel restored from old rock-cut houses, once an Orthodox Greek dwelling, with colourful contemporary-Turkish interiors and terraces looking across the valley to the floodlit Ortahisar Castle. Run with warmth by a family who keep a rug-and-textile museum in Ürgüp, it suits travellers who want character and calm in a real village, with the town's restaurants and the wider region a short drive away. Many visitors split the difference, basing in the Ürgüp area for the calm and the food while heading out by day to Göreme and the busier valleys for the sights.

When to Go

The best months are spring and autumn, roughly April to June and September to October, when days are mild, skies clear and the balloons fly most reliably; these are also the busiest. Summer is hot and crowded; winter is cold and can be beautiful under snow, but with more frequent balloon cancellations. Ürgüp's wine harvest in early autumn is a fine time to visit, and the balloons, weather permitting, fly year-round.

Getting There and Around

Ürgüp is served by Cappadocia's two regional airports, Nevşehir (Kapadokya) and Kayseri, each around 40 minutes to an hour away, with daily flights from Istanbul; a hotel transfer is the easiest arrival. The town itself is walkable, and Ortahisar a short hop away, but a hired car, tours or taxis are useful for the wineries, underground cities, viewpoints and the more distant valleys scattered across the region.
