Top Secret

A homely retreat on Mexico’s Pacific south coast, where guests can ramble among the cacti and agave plants as hefty waves crash against the empty beach. The attention to detail is astounding – Amalys looks and feels like a classy art gallery.

The Review

Each private and individually designed bungalow looks out to the Pacific Ocean, and they’re as grand and thoughtfully curated as the rest of the property. Everything feels chunky and high quality: the sheets are pressed and pristine, while the wooden beams have been planed and stained to perfection. Each has an inside and outside shower, and doors or windows on every side allow a balmy breeze to wash through. In fact, they’ve been designed so well in this respect that you’ll seldom need to use the air-conditioning, perhaps apart from afternoons in the summer months.

In fact, from each private bungalow you’re no more that about 50 steps from the Pacific Ocean; while there are similar properties along this stretch of immaculate beach, there’s a genuine feeling of emptiness. The sunsets are spectacular.

There’s a small, air-conditioned gym with a treadmill, weight machine and a bike, plus a TV room where guests can watch hundreds of European and Mexican channels. Amalys also has a resident four-legged host: Dream, the Hungarian Viszla. His human colleagues are equally friendly, too.

Where possible, ingredients are local, seasonal and organic, so meals change depending on the time of year. It’s very likely you’ll be served up tuna, dorada and local oysters – and plenty of organic papaya, grown in the adjacent farm. There isn’t really a menu, but meals and snacks can be prepared when hunger strikes, and all dietary requirements can be catered for (with ample warning). Dinners are taken at the long parota wood dining table and there’s a huge selection of imported spirits, wines and beers.

Definitely, Amalys is a real paradise !
