Expert Review
Origins
Built between 1750 and 1800, Antigua Casona San Blas began as a stately colonial residence in Cusco’s artisan quarter. Generations of history were layered into its adobe walls—walls originally constructed using traditional methods blending cactus, straw, and mud. Over time, the property aged along with the city, becoming a quiet witness to Cusco’s evolution from Inca capital to Spanish stronghold to global destination.
The transformation into the hotel you see today was not a commercial development, but a heartfelt restoration led by a local family with deep roots in the region. With reverence for Cusco’s cultural legacy, they undertook a meticulous restoration completed in June 2016 under the supervision of the Ministerio de Cultura. Original roof tiles were salvaged and reused. The hand-carved balcony that once graced the facade was faithfully replicated. Colonial adobe bricks were recovered to rebuild the thick, insulating walls.
Every design choice was made to preserve the soul of the original casona while crafting a space of quiet luxury, reflection, and comfort. Today, Antigua Casona San Blas stands as a love letter to Peruvian heritage—where history lives in the architecture, and warmth is felt in every stone and smile.
Top Secret
Hidden beneath the stone pathways, the hotel’s original aqueduct channels still whisper Cusco’s ancient rhythms—ask the staff to show you the preserved sections near the courtyard for a quiet glimpse into the past few ever notice.
The Review
Through the carved wooden doors of Antigua Casona San Blas, time instantly softens. The noise of Cusco's cobbled streets falls away, replaced by the crackle of a wood-burning fireplace and the scent of eucalyptus tea, offered upon arrival. A sense of calm, almost sacred, takes over as you're guided past candlelit corridors and the lush, open-air courtyard—its flickering fire pits and stone fountain feel like an invitation to pause.
The room? An Andean sanctuary of warm textiles, exposed beams, and artisanal ceramics. The bed is cloud-soft, framed by handcrafted headboards, while underfoot, centuries-old floor tiles tell their own story. Rainfall showers wash away the altitude's edge, and heated floors greet bare feet with quiet luxury.
In the morning, yoga sessions unfold on the terrace beneath a watercolor sky, and breakfast in the sun-drenched café pairs local ingredients with quiet classical guitar in the background. Evenings call for a cocktail beside the fire, as the city lights twinkle from the hills above.
When it’s finally time to leave, you’ll linger a moment longer at the threshold—half hoping the staff forgets to call your taxi, just so you can stay wrapped in the stillness a bit longer.
