We Love

  • The location — on a private island in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, around 15 minutes by boat from Hanifaru Bay, the world's largest manta-ray and whale-shark aggregation site, best from roughly May to November.
  • The house reef — a living 360-degree reef wraps the whole island with direct snorkelling from every villa, home to turtles, reef sharks and eagle rays, with three underwater caves alongside for divers.
  • The pool — at 750 square metres, the largest in the Maldives, built around a mature banyan tree, with a separate family pool and a bar for sunset cocktails.
  • The Thai heritage — the brand's Thai roots show in Benjarong, the over-water Thai restaurant, in the Devarana treetop spa pods set among the palms, and in cooking classes with the resort's chefs.
  • The villas — 94 across nine categories, beach and over-water, most with a private pool, in a Thai-Maldivian style of thatched roofs, hardwood floors and outdoor showers.

Origins

The Maldives is a nation of coral atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean, and Baa Atoll is among its most celebrated — the country's first and only UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, recognised for a marine ecosystem rich enough to draw manta rays and whale sharks in their hundreds. At its heart is Hanifaru Bay, the largest known manta aggregation site on earth, where the southwest monsoon funnels plankton into a shallow bay and the giant rays gather to feed.

Dusit Thani Maldives sits on Mudhdhoo Island in this atoll, a 16-hectare island ringed by white sand and a living house reef. It opened in 2012 as the Maldives flagship of Dusit International, the Thai hotel group, and the idea behind it is the meeting of two cultures — Thai heritage and Maldivian island life. That shows in the architecture, in thatched-roof villas with hardwood floors and Thai furnishings; in the food, built around Benjarong, the over-water Thai restaurant; and in the Devarana spa, whose treatment pods are raised into the coconut palms.

It is a full island resort rather than an intimate one — 94 villas and residences across nine categories, beach and over-water, the great majority with private pools, alongside several restaurants, a PADI dive centre, a kids' club and the largest infinity pool in the Maldives. But the setting is the real draw. The 360-degree house reef can be snorkelled straight from any villa, three underwater caves lie just offshore, and Hanifaru Bay is a short boat ride away. For divers, snorkellers and anyone drawn to the Baa Atoll's marine life, it is one of the best-placed resorts in the country.

Top Secret

Time a stay for the mantas. The resort's single greatest asset is its position in the Baa Atoll Biosphere, around 15 minutes by boat from Hanifaru Bay — the largest manta-ray aggregation site in the world, where dozens, sometimes hundreds, of giant mantas and the occasional whale shark gather to feed. The season runs roughly from May to November, peaking in the middle months; the resort runs on-call snorkelling trips so guests can move quickly when the rays appear. Plan a trip for those months and you may have the marine encounter of a lifetime a few minutes from your villa.

The Review

Dusit Thani Maldives is among the best-placed resorts in the country for anyone who comes to the Maldives for the sea — a 94-villa island in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere, with a superb 360-degree house reef and the world's greatest manta-ray site a short boat ride away. It is a polished, full-service island resort with a Thai-heritage character rather than a small, intimate property, and on its core strengths — marine life, dining, and design — it delivers at a price that tends to undercut its Baa Atoll neighbours.

The pleasures are the reef, the food, and the spaces. The house reef, snorkelled straight from the villa, is genuinely excellent, and Hanifaru Bay is the headline. The Thai dining is a real point of difference in the Maldives — Benjarong's over-water Thai kitchen, a new plant-based restaurant from the resort's own gardens, and the Devarana treetop spa, the 750-square-metre pool, and the family facilities round out a strong all-rounder. Villas are large and well-kept, most with private pools and direct reef access.

The honest notes are worth knowing. This is a lush, jungly island rather than a wide-beach one — the sand is limited, and the over-water villas sit on the lagoon at high tide but over sand at low, so set expectations accordingly. It is also remote, even by Maldivian standards: seaplanes fly in daylight only, so late arrivals face a domestic flight and speedboat or an airport overnight. And as across the Maldives, service charge and tax add close to a third to dining bills. But for the reef, the mantas, and a Thai-accented island stay, it is hard to fault.
