Origins
In 1928 this building was 10 storeys high and towered over Auckland city. Originally a tea-room and soda fountain at ground level, the building also housed a restaurant and a plethora of artisan bakers and confectioners ready to make treats for Aucklanders.
Top Secret
Hotel Grand Windsor was the city’s first and tallest skyscraper! She’s watched the CBD and waterfront grow up around her while holding onto her charm.
The Review
The grand lady of New Zealand streets is the one and only Queen Street, at the heart of Auckland City and here’s where you’ll find the Hotel Grand Windsor. She is the Queen of hotels here; a regal and refined building, beautifully restored for guests to experience an intimate and luxurious stay.
Pablo was the first to greet us, he spied us coming down the Street (no mean feat, it’s busy!) and came rushing to take our bags and welcome us. Stepping through the doors was a genuine cliché as the busyness of the street and week of work evaporated. As Jake checked us in staff glided across the Art Deco foyer to welcome us with a seasonal tea (refreshing ginger and lemon spring delight) that marked the start of a weekend retreat.
Tasteful restoration makes for an aesthetically pleasing experience, but kiwi hospitality is the real jewel in the crown here. We were blown away by how approachable, friendly and attentive the staff were, consummate professionals who made us feel welcome and comfortable. We’re talking first name basis, speak in the language you’re comfortable with, have a chuckle and relax. We loved dining at the restaurant for these interactions as well as the organic food and wine. The chefs can take you on a veritable ‘food tour of New Zealand’ as they use specialities from around the country (think Marlborough salmon, mmm!).
One might be tempted to settle into the pillowy-soft beds and enjoy relaxing in your room. This is fair enough as in the suites there is a divine tea table for just such purposes. The gorgeous tea set is a throwback to the building’s former days as a tea house. Each room’s theme stems from a piece of jewellery from the Duke of Windsor’s wife Wallis Simpson’s private collection. Our room had a covetous emerald ring on the wall and this colour was threaded through the furnishings. Scented bathroom lotions will make you feel incredible after showering but if that’s not sufficient for unwinding you can try the private sauna or spa.
You’ll find a little bit of heritage, a little bit of luxury and a lot of kiwi charm at the Hotel Grand Windsor, a real gem.
