Origins
The ground made history before the fort did. On 30 April 1848, the hills of Pastrengo saw one of the opening battles of Italian unification — the day the Carabinieri made their celebrated cavalry charge, the Carica di Pastrengo, still commemorated by the corps today. The Austrians answered the lesson in stone: a decade later they raised Forte Benedek here, part of the Habsburg defensive line guarding the land between the Adige and the lake until 1866, when the Veneto passed to Italy and the fort's military career quietly ended.
What remained was a hilltop: the fort, and around it seventy thousand square metres of vines, olives, oleanders and agaves looking down to Lake Garda. The estate is a working farm before it is a hotel — an agriturismo in the proper legal sense — producing its own organic wines and extra virgin olive oil, and it found the most natural possible use for a fortress: the wines age inside the old casemates, where the temperature never argues, and the tastings happen under the vaults where garrisons once sat.
The relais grew beside the fort as its civilian counterpart: sixteen suites for adults only, each with a private steam bath, hung with works by the Veronese painter Antonio Amodio, facing the vines or the fortress itself. The spa completed the conversion, threading a Finnish sauna into the fort's walls and a flotation tank into its quiet — so that a building made for war now does nothing but restore people, which is its own small piece of Italian history.

Book the saltwater flotation tank — the spa calls it the Roman bath, and twenty weightless minutes inside the fort's walls reorders the nervous system. Then take the e-bike loop: three guided hours through the vines to Calmasino and Lazise, with a tasting of the estate's wine and oil waiting on your return.
The Review
Pastrengo's hills sit just back from the lake, and the difference is audible: vineyards, olive rows, birdsong, and the long grey geometry of an Austrian fort where the eastern shore's crowds simply aren't. The relais keeps its scale private — sixteen suites, adults only, soft colours and Amodio's canvases — and every room comes with its own steam bath, so the wind-down begins before you reach the spa.
Days are built around water and wine. The K Club fills the warm months: the thalasso-inspired infinity pool with the lake in the distance, king-size loungers, and a bar that brings the drinks and light dishes to you until seven. The spa carries the rest of the year — tropical and Finnish saunas, the ice waterfall, three heated outdoor hot tubs facing the lake, and the flotation tank in the fort's silence. Between sessions there are e-bikes into Lazise, the chef's cooking class, and the short run down to Bardolino and the lakefront.
Evenings settle into the estate's own produce: cold cuts and cheeses, vegetables from the territory, and the organic labels that have spent their maturation inside the fortress walls — drunk a few metres from where they aged, which no wine list on the lakeshore can claim. It is a particular proposition, this house: history at the bottom of the garden, a steam bath in the bedroom, and nobody under eighteen for miles. For couples, that is precisely the point.
