Origins
Dana and Dave Krauskopf have true wanderlust. After scoping out a location - from a four-seater plane - and meeting the then owner, a line was drawn in the sand and an agreement was made. They have been striving to preserve and promote the beauty of the land ever since.
Top Secret
Hopkins is famous for its Garifuna population and the exuberant traditions they possess. For a chance to experience some of this culture first hand, ask one of the barmen where the locals will be showcasing the Punta music and either ask for a lift from the hotel or, if you’re feeling adventurous, ride one of the hotel’s bicycles into town to experience the music and dances nostalgic of centuries past.
The Review
Unbelizeable. Just another clichéd catchphrase? Think again. Those brave enough will want to traverse this untouched tropical landscape at the helm of a rented 4x4 (spot the Toucan will be a favourite game). Then again, cruising down the coastline in a 12 seater plane, with the rainforest to your right and the azure Caribbean Sea to your left, is not a bad way to travel. Nestled between the world’s second largest barrier reef and an impressive rainforest, is Hopkins. A sleepy stretch of paradise, it is here where rhythmic Garufina traditions, the smell of barbequed lobster and neighbouring howler monkeys will awaken your senses.
Set back from the town, built among the lush natural landscape is Belize’s first marine and land adventure resort. Hamanasi oozes the rustic style that Belize is slowly becoming famous for. It is stunning. Sleek wooden furniture, hand woven upholstery and colours reminiscent of the jungle that surround it. And sustainable from the ground up: locally staffed, sustainably built and environmentally conscious. Gazing out at the dappled sunrise from your majestic (hand-carved) four-poster bed, you will see the wonders of the world without even rising. But rise you must, if for nothing else than to sample the delectable - and organically grown - local fruit at breakfast. Aptly fuelled, you’ll be ready: to dive with sharks, trek to the top of a tropical jungle or swim through caves to discover ancient Mayan artifacts. When the adventure is done, grab a rum punch, pick out a hammock and wait for the sun to set over the Caribbean Sea.
