Origins
Heure Bleue Palais began life in the late 1800s as the sumptuous city residence of a Portuguese sea captain, whose merchant voyages brought back exotic woods, hand-blown glass, and Moorish tile panels that still grace its walls today. For decades the riad slumbered behind its carved cedar doors, a hidden gem whispered about by Essaouira’s fishermen and artisans alike
In 1996, French hoteliers Lucien and Evelyne Tesson fell under its spell and embarked on a three-year restoration, enlisting local craftsmen to revive zellige mosaics, repair the central marble fountain, and stencil cedar ceilings with traditional Berber motifs. Partnering with Relais & Châteaux in 2000, they layered in modern comforts—heating systems, bespoke furnishings, and a rooftop pool—while safeguarding every vestige of the riad’s storied past, so that each guest now inhabits a living museum of Moroccan and Portuguese heritage
The Review
Stepping through Heure Bleue’s carved wooden door is like slipping into a Moroccan fairy tale: sun-dappled courtyards lined with zellige tiles, bougainvillea-draped walls, and the distant cry of seagulls where medina meets sea. Each of the 33 rooms and suites—dressed in African, Portuguese or Oriental motifs—feels simultaneously grand and intimate, with king-sized beds, stained-glass shutters, and oversized marble baths that beckon languid soaks
By day, the rooftop pool offers a secret oasis: heated to perfection, it mirrors the sky as you drift above the medina’s ochre rooftops. Come evening, the Terrace Grill and Salon Oriental transform into stages for Chef Ahmed Handour’s culinary theatre—modern Moroccan flavours married to French finesse, plated beneath lantern-lit arches. Between hammam rituals and mint-scented tea breaks, you’ll find yourself lingering over every moment, savoring the slow-time luxury that only Essaouira can inspire
