Expert Review
Origins
In the early 2000’s, Rafael Pereznares passion for the Patzcuaro lake region and the Purhépecha traditions transformed into an obsessive idea: use his engineering skills to create from a piece of abandoned land on the banks of the lake an amazing hacienda style boutique hotel following the ancient methods used centuries ago by the only people who resisted the Aztec empire influence. The walls were made of adobes (sun-dried bricks), and the whole structure from local woods cut and sculpted with indigenous axes. It took 10 years of hard work to finally accomplished Rafael’s dream and eventually hire the loyal local workers as the incredible hotel staff.

The Review
Stepping through the magnificent wooden doors of the Hacienda instantly transports you into a pure travel in time and local traditions. From the smiles of the hotel staff to the gorgeous view on the Patzcuaro lake, you know that you won’t leave untouched by the beauty and the trueness of the place. From the lobby level where stands the infinity pool, magical wooden stairs, which seems to take you above the lake waters, will get you to the garden levels and eventually to the hotel exquisite restaurant. This hand-crafted space is an art gallery itself displaying works of art for sale and the region’s finest platers and place settings from the community’s local artisan shops. The lake panoramic view allows travelers to relax while sipping one the bartender’s special margarita and waiting for an amazing regional cuisine. The surrounding gardens are full of exotic plants and trees from the region and is designed to be a living ecosystem where colourfull spiders and birds take shelter. Among them lies the famous Ucazanaztacua tree which gave its name to the Hacienda! The moment the freshness of the night grasps you means the time has come to go back to one of the seven suites, each of them uniquely designed, featuring different views and orientations. The terracotta floors and adobe walls, the chimneys and the finest linen instantly inspire comfort and luxury. Just ask the hotel staff to light you a fire when you come back from dinner to read a book or enjoy a last drink iin the warmness of the room! If you are lucky enough, you’ll visit the place during the Day of the Dead celebrations. Cempasúchil orange flowers become the top display decorating the offering for the Nights of the Souls. Michoacán region is Mexico’s most traditional place when it comes to this holy period of the year, and the Hacienda is probably one of the best places to fully experience its mystic nights.
