Origins
Longevity Wellness Worldwide built its flagship on a hillside in Alvor, the fishing village of the western Algarve that sits on the Ria de Alvor, and planned the whole house around its clinic. The building is a stack of white curved bands, a wave the house links to the water in its spa and to the old Latin formula Salus per Aquam, health through water. The medicine is integrative and regenerative, diagnostics and therapies set beside food and exercise in a single programme, and the guests are adults only.
Top Secret
If The One is taken, ask by name for a Longevity Suite. It sits higher in the building, the sitting room is separate from the bed and the ocean fills the balcony; on a week-long programme the extra room earns its keep in the evenings.
The Review
The building next door is a private hospital, and the clinic in this one works closely with it. That fact explains Longevity Health & Wellness Hotel better than its name does. It is a medical house first, adults only, 70 rooms over three floors on a hillside above Alvor, with the bay on one side and the Monchique hills on the other. The clinic takes up two floors of its own, and its list reads like a day-patient menu: cryotherapy, colonic hydrotherapy, ozone and hyperbaric medicine, osteopathy, Chinese medicine and hormone therapy, with the Iyashi Dôme and CoolSculpting for guests who came to change shape.
The rooms are the plain part, and the money spent on them buys the view. All are dressed in neutral greys and whites, and most have a shower and no bath. Standard Rooms on the first and second floors have a balcony with a partial view of the sea or the hills; the Longevity Rooms and Junior Suites look across the Bay of Alvor or straight at the mountains, and members book every category at rates we hold for the Club. The Longevity Suites sit higher, with a sitting room apart from the bed and the ocean in front. The One is the reason to spend, 110 square metres with the Atlantic uninterrupted, a dining table, a bubble bath and an infrared sauna of its own that looks at the sea.
Mediterrânico Restaurant by Longevity, on the ground floor, cooks from what the house calls functional ingredients, chosen to be anti-inflammatory and alkaline. Dinner begins with veal bone broth or braised mackerel and moves on to octopus with purple sweet potato or golden bream with corn and shellfish. Wine is on the list, which a clinic hotel need not allow and this one does without apology. Breakfast is a buffet of fruit, yoghurt and cheese with eggs cooked to order, and guests on a programme eat to a nutritionist's plan for the rest of the day. On the third floor the Rooftop Pure Café by Longevity serves salads and tuna tataki beside the infinity pool.
Indoors the water does the slower work, in a heated salt pool, a second pool for floating and a circuit of heat and cold. The programmes tie it to the clinic. They run from three-night detox and rest breaks to long intensive stays, and a Technogym gym with a personal training studio serves the guests who came to get fitter. Alvor beach is 1.1 kilometres away, for the afternoon a programme leaves free.
It suits a guest who wants a doctor's plan for a week, and a couple happy to pay for The One and its sauna. Anyone who wants a bath in a standard room or a pool for lengths will be disappointed, since the infinity pool on the roof is small and built for the view. At sunset the loungers up there face the bay as the light goes, and on a programme week that is the signal for an early night.
