Hotel Pigalle takes its name from the Pigalle quarter of Paris — the early-twentieth-century neighbourhood at the foot of Montmartre that gave the world the Moulin Rouge and the European music-hall tradition. The Gothenburg hotel borrows that spirit wholesale: theatrical, nocturnal and unashamedly decadent, a deliberate riposte to the pale-and-pared-back Scandinavian style that rules most of the country's hotels.
It sits on Södra Hamngatan, in the central waterfront quarter by Brunnsparken, and was created as a boutique hotel by the ESS Group, the Swedish hospitality company that runs it. Behind the period-Paris styling is a serious piece of hotel-making: 81 rooms and two suites, each individually designed, a French-Swedish restaurant, two bars and a rooftop terrace, and — the thing that sets it apart — a live-music programme that turns the lobby into a small concert venue most nights.
The result is among the most characterful places to stay in Gothenburg, and certainly the most theatrical: a hotel that commits completely to its idea, from the velvet and the period furniture to the soul and funk on the speakers. It is a stay for people who find minimalism a little cold, and who like their hotel to have a pulse after dark.

The piano bar opens later than the dining service, and the room comes alive after eleven, with surprise musicians most evenings — a different act each week, the soundtrack moving through soul, funk and the occasional jazz set. It is worth checking the Pigalle Live calendar before booking your dates if the music is part of why you are coming; on the right night, the lobby concert is the best thing about the stay.

Pigalle commits to its role. Where most Scandinavian boutique hotels work in the contemporary-minimalist tradition — clean lines, muted palettes, restrained materials — Pigalle does the opposite: La Belle Époque Paris reimagined through Gothenburg, all heavy velvet curtains, soft linens and period furniture, with a soundtrack of soul and funk running from morning through to the piano bar at night. It is a hotel with a point of view, and it holds it.
The 81 rooms and two suites are each individually designed, from the entry-rate Petite to the flagship Suite Belle; the consistency is not uniformity but commitment, every room a different version of the same idea. The detail is layered, the materials are heavy, and the sound systems are good enough that the music carries on even in the bath. Three dining spaces work different hours: Restaurant Pigalle on the ground floor in a neighbourhood-tavern feel, French-meets-Swedish and all-day; Bar Pigalle for the late afternoon and evening; and the rooftop restaurant and terrace for the other half of the day, with sweeping views over the city.
But the property's strongest single feature is Pigalle Live. In the evenings the lobby transforms — the piano bar opens, a musician arrives, the room fills, and the hotel becomes a small concert venue. The interior is the reason for being; the music is what keeps it alive past midnight. It suits the traveller who wants character, nightlife and a sense of theatre over Scandinavian restraint, in a central, walkable spot. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from the music; everyone else will find it the most characterful stay in Gothenburg.
