Origins
Drake Bay was selected after years of travelling driven by Joe’s passion for fishing as the most beautiful place to live and close to world-class fishing spots. Arriving on a plot of land with two bags of tools just a few years ago, Joe’s background in construction allowed him to build something that showcases and immerses guests in the beauty of the region.
Top Secret
Keep an eye on the many cecropia trees on the property, they’re loved by toucans and monkeys alike.
The Review
Drake Bay is known for its untouched natural beauty and for being a little off the beaten path in Costa Rica. A short flight from San Jose, you arrive at a tiny airport surrounded by vegetation that could easily serve in a Bond film scene. The hotel arranges for transfers and you’ll soon find your way down a bumpy road less travelled to arrive at Southern Drake Lodge. Taking the form of a ship sailing proudly through a sea of green, the property has been meticulously crafted by the owners Joe and Sue. Their dream was to create a place that connects guests to the unique natural wonder of the region whilst affording the comfort and style of a top relaxation retreat.
The richness of Costa Rican ecosystems is world-famous and for good reason. A trip to Corcovado National Park and Caño Island in search of tapir, dolphins and a host of other species boasted by the region comes high on most guests’ to-do lists. The magic of the moments created as you discover and at times interact with the wildlife are truly special. Hearing howler monkeys as you brush your teeth in your semi-open bathroom is a rare new feature in your morning routine.
Guest rooms have all the features to help you get into the swing of things here in the jungle: hammocks, green vistas and outdoor rain-style showers. Though rooms have AC things can get a little hot and a dip in the freshwater swimming pool is perfect for those times. For those who don’t like smelling of chlorine for the day, it’s a real treat and perfect for the natural feeling that makes Southern Drake Lodge such a special place.
