Origins

The Goring opened in 1910, the work of Otto Goring, and it remains the rarest thing in London hospitality: a grand hotel still owned and run by the family that built it, now into its fourth generation under Jeremy Goring. Where almost every comparable London hotel has passed into the hands of an international group, The Goring has stayed independent and family-held — the last of its kind in the city — and that continuity runs through everything, from the long-serving staff to the way the place is quietly, constantly renovated rather than relaunched.

It sits on Beeston Place, a hushed cul-de-sac in Belgravia a few minutes' walk from Buckingham Palace, and its connection to that neighbour is part of its standing: in 2013 it became, and remains, the only hotel in the world to hold its own Royal Warrant for hospitality services. The 69 rooms and suites are individually designed in a confident, thoroughly English key — silks, antiques, marble bathrooms — and the grandest, including the Royal Suite, come with the attentions of the hotel's footmen.

Behind the hotel lies one of the largest private gardens of any in London, a genuine lawn in the middle of the city where afternoon tea is taken in summer and, on occasion, a Shetland pony grazes. Food matters here: The Dining Room is a serious modern-British restaurant with a local following of its own, the Veranda serves one of the city's better-loved afternoon teas, and the bar pours a properly made cocktail. For all its grandeur The Goring is warm rather than stiff, and unusually good with children — a grand hotel that has never forgotten how to be a family one.

Top Secret

Take tea in the garden in summer. The Goring keeps one of the largest private gardens of any London hotel, an expanse of lawn hidden behind the building, and on a fine afternoon there is no better place in Belgravia for afternoon tea. Families are genuinely welcomed — small guests are given their own teddy — and the footmen who look after the top suites turn an ordinary stay into something closer to being a houseguest at a very grand address.

The Review

The Goring is unlike anything else at its level in London, for one simple reason: it is the last grand hotel in the city still owned and run by its founding family. Opened in 1910 and now in its fourth Goring generation, it has stayed independent while its peers were absorbed into global groups, and that independence is the whole point — it shows in the long-serving staff, the steady reinvestment, and a confident Englishness that never tips into pastiche. A few minutes from Buckingham Palace, it is also the only hotel in the world to hold its own Royal Warrant.

The 69 rooms and suites are individually designed and unashamedly traditional — silks, antiques, marble — with the grandest, the Royal Suite among them, served by the hotel's footmen. The real luxuries, though, are space and quiet: a hushed Belgravia cul-de-sac, and behind the hotel one of the largest private gardens in London, where afternoon tea is served in summer. Dining is a genuine strength, The Dining Room holding a Michelin star for its modern British cooking, with a much-loved Veranda tea and a good bar alongside.

It suits travellers who want grandeur with warmth rather than gloss — and it is rare among hotels of this class for being properly good with families. There is no spa, and the style is firmly classic rather than contemporary, which will not suit everyone. But for heritage, service and a sense of place that no chain can manufacture, The Goring is one of London's true originals, and earns its standing.
