Expert Review
Origins
The Stay grew out of one person's idea of what an Istanbul hotel could be. In 2017 Ali İspahani, a former private-equity investor, founded the group with a vision built on two things, contemporary art and sustainability, converting characterful Istanbul buildings into design hotels rather than building anew. Working with the architect Mahmut Anlar and the acclaimed Istanbul design studio Autoban, he furnished them with recycled materials, local craftsmanship and pieces from his own art collection.
The Stay Nişantaşı is the most fashion-forward of the group, and its address says why: it sits directly above the Prada flagship on Abdi İpekçi Caddesi, in the heart of Nişantaşı, Istanbul's smartest shopping district, a quarter of Art Nouveau apartment buildings, designer boutiques and stylish cafes. The hotel reads less like a conventional hotel than a private city apartment: Autoban's calm, modern interiors in neutral tones, a Library Lounge built around a custom bookcase in place of a grand lobby, and Turkish art at every turn. The group is the first carbon-neutral hotel company in Turkey, and that quiet environmental conscience runs through the place alongside the design.
Top Secret
The art is the thing to look for: the hotel doubles as a gallery of contemporary Turkish work, masters hung beside younger names, so it pays to slow down in the corridors and lounge rather than walk straight past them to your room.

The Review
The Stay Nişantaşı is a design hotel for people who want to be in the middle of fashionable Istanbul and treat the city, rather than the hotel, as the event. It sits above the Prada flagship in Nişantaşı, the city's smartest shopping quarter, and is the most style-conscious property in the small, art-and-sustainability-minded Stay group, founded by Ali İspahani in 2017.
The look is the draw. Designed by the Istanbul studio Autoban, the 39 rooms run to custom wooden furniture, neutral tones and marble bathrooms, several with walk-in dressing rooms and the top-floor suites with private terraces; contemporary Turkish art hangs throughout, part of the owner's own collection, so the place feels curated rather than corporate. Public space is deliberately minimal, a Library Lounge Bar built around a floor-to-ceiling bookcase that serves as lobby, breakfast room and bar in one, which suits the apartment-like mood but means this is not a hotel with a buzzing scene of its own.
What it offers instead is location and ease. You are above Prada and a few steps from Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Chanel, with the boutiques of Turkish designers, the cafes and Maçka Park all walkable; drop the shopping in your room and head back out hands-free. Breakfast in the lounge is a strength; the staff judges well when to talk and when to leave you be, and the group's carbon-neutral ethos, refillable bottles, no plastic, local materials, is woven in without fuss.
It is worth being clear about what it is not. This is a compact city hotel, not a resort: the gym is small, there is no pool or spa here, public areas are limited, and a few guests note traffic noise. But for a design-led base in the best-located corner of Istanbul, run with a collector's eye and a light environmental touch, with the whole of Nişantaşı on the doorstep, The Stay Nişantaşı is among the most appealing boutique stays in the city.
