Origins

The Vintage sits on a quiet street in Príncipe Real, one of Lisbon's smartest and most central neighbourhoods, between the Amoreiras and Edward VII Park, a short walk from the city's best streets for eating and drinking. It is the work of Bomporto Hotels — the Portuguese group behind its sister hotel, The Lumiares, in nearby Bairro Alto — which took a building here and refurbished it from the ground up.

The idea was to redefine the word vintage in a contemporary key. The interiors draw on the mid-century — the clean, curved, modernist lines and the glamour of 1950s and 60s design — and rework it for now, with bespoke pieces of that era set among bold, warm colour and a great deal of one-off Portuguese craft. Almost everything was made in collaboration with Lisbon artists and makers, from the graphic artworks to the ceramics in the spa to the very pencils in the rooms; the look is playful and considered at once, and runs through the whole building.

What it adds up to is a design hotel that wears its style lightly. Fifty-nine rooms and suites, the best of them corner and castle-view suites, sit above a clutch of social spaces: the V rooftop bar among tropical plants, with the city laid out below; Blue Bistrot, where the chef cooks Portuguese food from his grandmother's recipes; and the Hangout, a mid-century lounge that doubles as a rotating gallery of contemporary Lisbon art. A velvet-and-brass spa, a pool and a gym complete it — a stylish, central base with a genuine cultural streak.

Top Secret

Start in your own room: each comes with a vintage bar cart and a complimentary gin and tonic kit, mixed from Portuguese ingredients by the cocktail expert Nino Lopes — the idea being to make your own drink and carry it up to the rooftop for the view. The other quiet pleasure is the Hangout downstairs, where the art on the walls is part of a changing programme of exhibitions and artist talks, so the hotel's social heart is never quite the same twice.

The Review

The Vintage is a design hotel that pulls off the trick of being stylish and genuinely warm at once. Set on a calm street in Príncipe Real, one of Lisbon's smartest central districts, it is the sister to the Lumiares — both Bomporto hotels — and takes mid-century design as its theme: curved modernist lines, the glamour of the 1950s and 60s, bold warm colour, and one-off pieces by Lisbon artists and makers in every corner, down to the pencils. Fifty-nine rooms and suites carry the look, the best with corner views over the city and castle.

The pleasures are the design, the details and the position. Each room has a vintage bar cart with a complimentary gin and tonic kit to mix and take up to the V rooftop bar, set among tropical plants with the city below. Blue Bistrot does Portuguese cooking from the chef's grandmother's recipes; the Hangout lounge doubles as a rotating gallery of Lisbon art, with talks and artist sessions; and the spa, all velvet, brick-red and brass, runs to a water lounge and bespoke local ceramics. There is a pool and a round-the-clock gym, and a cultural concierge to open doors into the city's art scene.

It suits design-minded travellers who want style, comfort and a smart, central address a little apart from the tourist crush — Príncipe Real is residential and elegant, with the best of Lisbon's food and nightlife a short walk off and the old town within reach. Larger and more hotel-like than its apartment-style sister, it trades intimacy for facilities and a livelier social scene. For mid-century design and a cultural bent in a great part of the city, it is a stylish and welcoming base.
