Introducing Qatar

Qatar is a small country that has made itself impossible to overlook. A peninsula jutting into the Arabian Gulf, barely larger than greater London, it turned pearling-era poverty into gas-fuelled wealth within living memory, and spent it on museums, airlines, stadiums and a capital that rewrote its own skyline. The 2022 World Cup put it on the map for many; what keeps travellers coming is the mix of that ambition with a culture that runs deeper than the towers suggest.

Almost everything is Doha. The capital holds the great museums, the restored Souq Waqif, the Corniche and nearly all the country's hotels, and most visits never really leave it. That concentration is part of the appeal: Qatar is one of the easiest countries in the region to see, compact, safe and twenty minutes from a world-class airport, which is why so many people meet it first as a stopover.

Beyond the city the country thins quickly to desert. The headline is Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, where dunes run straight into the Gulf, reached by 4x4 across the sand; to the north, the ruined pearling town of Al Zubarah is a UNESCO site. It is not a country of many destinations, but the ones it has are distinct, and the desert is closer to the city than in almost any of its neighbours.

Qatar Guide

Where to Go

Qatar is, for the traveller, essentially Doha and the desert around it. The capital is the reason to come and the base for everything: the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar, the restored lanes of Souq Waqif, the Katara cultural village, the Pearl and the Corniche all sit within it, and so do nearly all the country's hotels. Where you stay shapes the trip more than the address: the high-rise modern Doha of West Bay and the Pearl, the regenerated downtown of Msheireb, or the old-city character of Souq Waqif, where heritage buildings sit among the spice stalls and the daily horse parade. Beyond Doha, the desert is the draw: Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, for dunes meeting the Gulf, and the northern ruins of Al Zubarah for the pearling past.

When to Go

Qatar is firmly a winter destination. The comfortable months run roughly November to March, when the weather suits the Corniche, the souq and the desert; December to February is the cool, popular peak. Between May and September the heat is severe, often above 40 degrees, and daytime life retreats indoors. April and October are hot but bearable shoulders. Aim for the cooler half of the year for anything outdoors.

Getting There and Around

Hamad International Airport, a major global hub served by Qatar Airways, is the gateway, and it sits only 15 to 20 minutes from central Doha, which makes the country a natural stopover. The Doha Metro is clean, fast and cheap, covering the airport and the main city districts, with taxis and ride-hailing apps filling the gaps. For the desert and the Inland Sea, a guided 4x4 trip is the standard way, since the dunes are not for self-drivers.
