Introducing Doha

Doha has gone, in a single generation, from a pearling and fishing town on the Gulf to among the most ambitious cities in the Middle East. The skyline of West Bay, the museums, the airport and the stadiums all arrived in a rush of oil-and-gas wealth, and the result is a capital that can feel brand new. Look closer, though, and the older Qatar is still there, deliberately preserved, and the contrast between the two is what makes the city interesting.

The cultural heavyweights anchor any visit. I.M. Pei's Museum of Islamic Art, the dune-inspired National Museum of Qatar, the gallery quarter at Katara and the restored lanes of Souq Waqif give Doha a genuine cultural depth that its glossier neighbours often lack. Along the water, the Corniche curves for seven kilometres past the bay, best walked at dusk when the towers light up across the water.

For many travellers Doha is a stopover, a day or two on a Qatar Airways routing between continents, and it works well on those terms: compact, safe, easy to cover, with the airport twenty minutes from the centre. But it repays longer too, with the desert and the Inland Sea within reach, and a food and majlis culture that takes time to appreciate. Winter is the season; the summer heat is severe.

Where to Stay in Doha

Doha's districts pull in different directions, so the choice of base matters. West Bay and the Pearl are the modern, high-rise, marina-and-mall Doha, all glass towers and waterfront dining. Msheireb, the regenerated downtown, pairs heritage and contemporary design. But for character, the heart of the old city is Souq Waqif, the restored market that is the closest Doha comes to an old town. It is here that Al Jomrok makes its case: a small heritage hotel restored from the souq's old customs house, with carved-wood interiors and a rooftop Arabic restaurant, set among the spice stalls and the daily horse parade. It suits travellers who want the old city at the door rather than a tower above a mall, and who value character over scale.

When to Go

Doha is a winter destination. The comfortable season runs roughly November to March, when days are warm and clear and the Corniche, the souq and the desert are all pleasant; December to February is the cool, popular peak. Between May and September the heat is severe, regularly above 40 degrees, and life moves indoors to the malls and air-conditioning. The shoulder months of April and October are hot but manageable. Time a visit for the cooler half of the year if you can.

Getting Around

Hamad International Airport, one of the region's major hubs, is about 15 to 20 minutes from the centre, which makes Doha an easy stopover. The Doha Metro is clean, cheap and fast, linking the airport, West Bay, Msheireb and Souq Waqif, and is the simplest way to move around. Taxis and ride-hailing apps fill the gaps. For the desert and the Inland Sea, a guided 4x4 tour is the usual way, since the dunes need a driver who knows them.
