Introducing United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates is one of the world's great modern success stories: a federation of seven emirates on the Arabian Peninsula that, in barely half a century, has turned desert and pearling coast into a byword for ambition, luxury and spectacle. Bordering the Gulf, with Saudi Arabia and Oman as neighbours, it pairs year-round sunshine and warm seas with cities that seem to have been imagined rather than merely built.

Most visitors come for Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the two emirates that dominate the picture. Dubai is the showman: record-breaking towers, palm-shaped islands, malls, beaches and nightlife, brash and exhilarating. Abu Dhabi, the capital, is grander and more measured, home to the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Formula 1 circuit on Yas Island. Together they offer beaches, culture, shopping and desert within easy reach of one another.

Beyond the two big cities lies a quieter country. The northern emirates, Sharjah with its museums, Ras Al Khaimah with its mountains and Fujairah on the Indian Ocean coast, are calmer and more traditional, and everywhere the desert is close, the backdrop to the whole federation. With superb hospitality, near-guaranteed winter sun and a position at the crossroads of the world, the UAE suits a stopover and a longer stay alike.

Where to Go

The choice for most trips is Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or both, an easy pairing given they sit barely 90 minutes apart by road. Dubai is the headline: a futuristic city of the world's tallest building, palm islands, long beaches at the Marina and the Palm, world-class dining and shopping, and the desert on its doorstep. It flexes between beach holiday, city break and family trip, often all at once. Abu Dhabi, the federal capital, is more spacious and cultural: the vast Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the museums of Saadiyat Island, the theme parks and Grand Prix circuit of Yas Island, and the mangroves and corniche of the city itself. Many visitors split a trip between the two, or use one as a base and day-trip to the other.

Beyond the Cities

The rest of the UAE is quieter and repays a little exploration. Sharjah, next to Dubai, is the cultural emirate, with strong museums and heritage districts; Ras Al Khaimah, to the north, has the country's highest mountains and a growing adventure scene; and Fujairah, on the east coast, faces the Gulf of Oman with diving and quieter beaches. And across all of them lies the desert, reachable within an hour of the cities for dune drives, camel treks and nights under the stars in a desert camp.

When to Go

The UAE runs on the cooler months between November and April, when warm, sunny days make the beaches, desert, golf and outdoor dining a pleasure; this is peak season, and prices reflect it. The summer between June and September is intensely hot, often above 40 degrees, driving life indoors to the malls and air-conditioned interiors, though hotel rates fall steeply. The shoulder months either side balance warmth with better value.

Getting the Most From a Trip

Because the emirates are close together but distinct, a UAE trip is easily tailored. The simplest plan bases in Dubai for the beaches, city and desert, with a day or two in Abu Dhabi for its culture, the two linked by an easy drive. Beach-focused travellers might stay put on the coast; golfers and those after calm often choose a quieter inland or residential base; and the more adventurous push north to the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah or east to Fujairah's coast. A night in a desert camp, under the stars within an hour of the city, is the one addition almost everyone is glad of.

Getting There and Around

The UAE is one of the world's great aviation hubs, with major airports at Dubai (DXB) and Abu Dhabi and superb connections worldwide, which makes it a natural stopover between continents. On the ground, Dubai has a clean, cheap metro along its main spine, but taxis and ride apps are the usual way to cover the long distances within and between cities; the Dubai-Abu Dhabi run is a straightforward drive. A hire car suits those exploring the desert, the mountains or the east coast.
