We Love

  • The golf. An 18-hole championship course designed by Colin Montgomerie across 265 acres of fairways, lakes and gardens, with an academy course and floodlit practice.
  • The calm. A genuinely peaceful, country-club setting away from the glitz of central Dubai, where you wake to birdsong, lakes and gardens rather than traffic.
  • The service. Small enough that the staff learn your name and preferences; repeat guests talk of being treated more like friends than customers.
  • Dinner at Nineteen. A table on the balcony over the floodlit course at dusk is the standout, with Monty's by the 18th for all-day dining.
  • The spa. The Angsana spa, with therapists trained at the Banyan Tree academy, steam rooms and a treatment menu built around proper unwinding.

Origins

The Address Montgomerie is built around its golf course. The 18-hole, par-72 championship course was designed by the Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie with the noted course architect Desmond Muirhead, laid out across 265 acres of fairways, landscaped gardens and lakes in Emirates Hills, one of Dubai's most exclusive residential districts. The hotel that sits within it is small and low-key by Dubai standards, an intimate property of 22 rooms run as a boutique golf retreat rather than a city tower.

It belongs to Address Hotels and Resorts, the luxury arm of the Dubai developer Emaar, but the experience is closer to a country club than a big-brand resort: lakes and birdsong, a clubhouse, an academy course and practice facilities, and a calm that regular guests prize as a relief from the noise and glitter of central Dubai. The rooms were refreshed in soft greens and brass that echo the fairways outside, and much of the appeal is the personal scale of the place, where the staff come to know returning guests by name. It is, first and foremost, a hotel for people who want to play golf, or simply to slow down, a short drive but a different world in mood from the Marina and the malls.

Top Secret

Through the day the poolside team bring round fresh fruit lollies, cold towels and mocktails unprompted; and there is one spot on the bridge across the course where garden, lake, hotel and the Dubai skyline line up in a single frame found nowhere else in the city.

The Review

The Address Montgomerie is an unusual thing in Dubai: a small, calm, golf-focused retreat in a city better known for its towers and superlatives. It sits in Emirates Hills, a leafy residential district of lakes and large villas, wrapped around an 18-hole championship course designed by Colin Montgomerie, and the appeal is exactly the quiet that the rest of Dubai lacks. Guests wake to birdsong and green fairways, with the skyline a distant frame rather than the view.

It is a boutique property, just 22 rooms, recently refreshed in soft greens and brass to echo the course outside. The rooms are generously sized, the standards a full 44 square metres, with freestanding tubs, walk-in showers and balconies, the Premier Golf View rooms looking straight over the fairways. What guests return for, though, is the service: at this scale the staff learn names and preferences, and the reviews are full of people who come back twice a year and are treated like friends. That personal, country-club feel is the heart of it.

Golf is the obvious draw, the championship course joined by a par-3 academy course, floodlit practice and a Troon golf academy, but the resort works as a pure unwind too. There is a generous outdoor pool over the 18th green, the Angsana spa with Banyan Tree-trained therapists, and two restaurants worth staying in for: Monty's, all-day and international by the 18th, and Nineteen, best from a balcony table over the floodlit course at dusk.

It is worth being clear about what it is not. This is a golf resort, not a beach hotel: the sea and the Marina are about 15 minutes away by car, the setting is residential rather than central, and the pool can get busy with families at weekends. But for golfers, and for anyone who wants a calm, personal, green-fringed base away from the glare of the city, The Address Montgomerie is among the most relaxing places to stay in Dubai.
