Introducing Umea

Umeå is the unlikely cultural capital of the Swedish north — a young, lively university city on the Ume River, a long way up towards the Arctic, where you might expect wilderness and instead find museums, music and a third of the population under thirty. Sweden's northern student city, it was a European Capital of Culture in 2014, and the energy of that year still runs through its riverfront of galleries, concert halls and cafés.

They call it the City of Birches, for the thousands of trees planted along its avenues after a great fire, and the name fits its character: fresh, green and Nordic, a modern town set in wild country. Come for the culture — the celebrated guitar museum, the riverside arts centre, the sculpture park — and stay for what lies around it: the lake and forest at the city's edge, the Gulf of Bothnia archipelago, and the northern lights overhead on a clear winter night.

Where to go in Umeå

Umeå's cultural life gathers on the river. The Väven — "the weave" — is the striking modern cultural house on the Umeälven, holding the city library, cinemas, cafés and the Museum of Women's History, Sweden's first; nearby, the Bildmuseet shows contemporary art in a timber-clad tower on the university's riverfront campus. The city's best-known draw is quirkier: Guitars – The Museum, the world's foremost collection of vintage electric guitars, begun by a pair of local twins and now home to the rarest Gibsons and Fenders of the 1950s. On the edge of town, Umedalen Sculpture Park sets works by Louise Bourgeois, Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor among the trees, free and always open.

For the region's story, Gammlia gathers the open-air Västerbottens Museum, with its old farmhouses and Sami camp, telling the history of the county and its people. And the university gives the city its tempo: some thirty thousand students fill the bars, music venues and record shops, and lend Umeå a youthful, creative buzz rare this far north. Between the sights, simply walk the riverside paths and the birch-lined avenues that give the city its name.

Nature, the seasons and where to stay

What sets Umeå apart is how close the wild lies to the culture. Minutes from the centre, Nydalasjön lake has a ten-kilometre shore path for walking, swimming and cross-country skiing in season; the Ume River is lined with green; and the Gulf of Bothnia opens into an archipelago of islands, with summer ferries out to Holmön for cycling and coastal calm. In the dark months the northern lights appear on clear nights, best seen away from the city glow by the lake or the coast. This is a city you can leave behind in minutes for forest, water or sky.

The seasons are emphatic this far north: long, bright summer days for the islands and the lake; gold birch leaves in a short, lovely autumn; and a long, snowy winter for skiing, dog-sledding nearby and the lights. For where to stay, the club's choice is in the heart of it: Stora Hotellet, a characterful boutique hotel in Umeå's 1895 seafarer's house on the river, its theatrical nautical interiors a story in themselves, a short walk from the Väven and the city centre. It makes an apt and atmospheric base for a city of culture and water.
