Introducing San Juan

San Juan is the oldest city under the United States flag and among the most atmospheric in the Caribbean: a five-century-old Spanish colonial capital wrapped in pastel townhouses, blue cobblestones and sea walls, set on the warm Atlantic coast of Puerto Rico. It is a city of two speeds, the lived-in history of the old town and the beaches, rooftops and nightlife of the newer districts, and most visitors want a measure of both.

The heart is Old San Juan, a walled quarter of forts, plazas and balconied streets on a headland, compact enough to cross on foot and dense with bars, galleries and colonial churches. West stand the great Spanish citadels of El Morro and San Cristóbal, now a World Heritage Site; the lanes between are some of the prettiest in the region.

Beyond the old town the city spreads along the coast. Condado is the smart seaside strip of lagoon, beach and design hotels; Isla Verde has the broad resort beaches near the airport; and Santurce is the arts-and-food quarter, all street murals and late dinners. Add El Yunque rainforest and a bioluminescent bay within a short drive, and San Juan works as both a city break and a base for the island.

Where to Stay in San Juan

San Juan's districts each set a different tone, so the choice of base matters more than the address. Old San Juan is for history and atmosphere, walkable and beautiful but short on beach; Isla Verde is for resort sand near the airport; and Condado, the smart waterfront strip between the lagoon and the sea, is the design-and-dining heart, walkable to beach, shops and nightlife and ten minutes from the old town. It is in Condado that the club's two San Juan hotels sit, a block apart: O:live Boutique Hotel, an intimate, adults-only, Mediterranean-themed bolthole of antiques and reclaimed wood, and its grown-up sibling O:LV Fifty Five, a sleek adults-only design tower crowned by a double-tiered rooftop pool over the lagoon. One leans bohemian and romantic, the other polished and modern; both put the best of Condado at the door.

When to Go

San Juan is a year-round city, but the prime window is the dry season between December and April, with warm, bright days and lower humidity; this is also the busy, pricier peak. The summer and autumn months are hotter and wetter, and the official hurricane season runs between June and November, with the highest risk around August and September. Late spring and early December are the value sweet spots, with decent weather before or after the crowds.

Getting Around

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport sits about 15 minutes from Condado and the old town, making arrivals easy. Within the city, taxis and rideshare apps are the simplest way to move between the districts; a rental car is unnecessary for a San Juan-only stay and a nuisance to park in the old town, though useful for exploring the wider island. Old San Juan is best on foot, and a free trolley loops its main sights.
