Origins

Athina Luxury Suites is the flagship property of the Aestian Santorini collection — a family-owned multi-property Greek hospitality group with four hotels across the island plus two operated restaurants. Founded and run by Panagiotis Iglesis as Owner/Manager, the property has grown progressively across the past two decades from its original boutique-suite footprint into the current 32-accommodation operation distributed across three adjacent caldera-cliff sections: Athina Luxury Suites (the principal section), Athina Honeymoon Suites (couples-focused), and Athina Aperto Suites — all positioned just steps from one another within the same Fira caldera-cliff position. The wider Aestian collection includes Venus Sunrise Suites & Villas at Vourvoulos, Eteoro Suites on the Imerovigli cliffs, and Sienna Eco Resort at Exo Gialos, plus the Aestian-operated restaurants Rizes Gastro Taverna and Esperisma Bar-Restaurant which sit adjacent to the Athina hotel. The property was fully renovated in 2019 and 2020 with exclusive materials, minimal luxury design, and upgraded services — most notably the addition of the cave-style suites designed by Yiannis Tzortzos in neutral stone and beige tones, alongside the original contemporary suites in white-washed wood. The dual architectural register — cave-style traditional alongside contemporary minimalism — is one of the property's distinctive editorial signatures.

Top Secret

The MSF philanthropic commitment is one of the property's most editorially distinctive but rarely-surfaced features. Athina Luxury Suites donates 1% of its online booking income directly to Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) — the international medical humanitarian organisation delivering emergency aid in conflict zones, epidemics, and disasters worldwide. The hotel has set a target of €10,000 annually for MSF, and offers guests the option to add a donation of their choice during the booking checkout process. Few Greek luxury hotels carry this depth of structural philanthropic positioning — and the donation flows directly from the bookings through the hotel's own website (not third-party platforms), making the booking-direct approach itself a verifiable contribution to MSF's lifesaving work.
The Private Candlelight Dinner on the exclusive balcony — fresh flowers, personal waiter, champagne, sunset, Esperisma's chef serving from the award-winning menu — is the property's signature romantic-occasion arrangement. Couples celebrating engagements, anniversaries, honeymoons or vow renewals use the balcony arrangement as the centrepiece evening of their Santorini stay.

The Review

  • Santorini is the most internationally recognised of the Greek Cycladic islands — known for the volcanic caldera arc that runs along the island's western edge, the white-sugar-cube architecture of the cliff-top villages, the sunsets over the volcano that have become the island's principal photographic anchor, and the broader wine-and-gastronomy heritage built on the island's distinctive volcanic terroir. Fira (also known as Thira) is Santorini's main town and cosmopolitan capital — the commercial centre of the island, with the principal restaurant, bar, boutique and museum infrastructure; it carries a more cosmopolitan-buzz register than the more isolated villages of Oia (north) or Imerovigli (mid-arc). The town sits on the highest point of the caldera cliff with direct volcano views.

  • Athina Luxury Suites occupies a privileged caldera-cliff position in Fira itself — five minutes' walk from the town's commercial centre, immediately accessible to the cafes, restaurants, designer boutiques, art galleries, jewellery shops and the wider Fira nightlife circuit. The position is editorially distinctive against most luxury Santorini accommodation: where Oia and Imerovigli deliver isolation and silence, Athina delivers the caldera-cliff view combined with proximity to the town's cultural life. The property is also walkable to the Fira Archaeological Museum, the Megaro Gyzi Museum and the cultural anchors of the town. The descent to the property runs down winding stone steps from the main town pedestrian artery — guests with extensive luggage benefit from the hotel's bell-staff arrangement (the steep cliff descent is genuinely steep).

  • The architecture carries the traditional Cycladic register adapted for the cliff-cave style that defines the most distinctive Santorini accommodation. Suites are carved into the volcanic earth in the genuine cliff-face style, with whitewashed exteriors and the characteristic Santorini cave-interior register. The property comprises 32 accommodations across three adjacent sections: the principal Athina Luxury Suites section, the couples-focused Athina Honeymoon Suites section, and the Athina Aperto Suites section — all positioned just steps from one another within the same caldera-cliff complex, sharing the heated infinity pool with swim-up bar, the Aphrodite Spa, and the Esperisma and Rizes restaurant programme.

  • The 15 distinct suite categories range from the intimate Cozy Suites with indoor or outdoor jacuzzi (queen bed, 2 guests) through the Junior, Junior Cave, Master Loft, Deluxe and Signature Cave Suite categories, into the more substantial Cave Suite, Superior Suite, Grand Cave Suite, Honeymoon Suite, Cave Honeymoon Suite and Black Rock Honeymoon Suite with private pool, culminating in the property's flagship Royal Suite with outdoor jacuzzi — 140 m² across two master bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms plus a third bathroom, accommodating up to 6 guests, the most exclusive accommodation in the Athina inventory. The 2019-2020 full renovation by architect / designer Yiannis Tzortzos added the cave-style new suites in neutral stone and beige tones, alongside the preservation of the original contemporary suites in white-washed wood.

  • The amenity inventory is one of the property's principal editorial differentiators — verifiably luxury-house across the entire programme. Frette Italian sheets (the Italian luxury bedding house supplying Europe's most decorated hotels), Guy Laroche linens and towels (the French luxury house), Hermes or Guerlain bath cosmetics with guest choice between the two French maisons, Nespresso machines in every suite, tablet and Bluetooth speaker, LCD satellite TV (32" or 43"), bathrobes and slippers, memory foam beds, mini bar, safe, weight scale, iron with ironing board. The per-suite inventory reads more as a five-star European hotel-house standard than as a typical Greek-island boutique register.

  • The Aphrodite Spa carries the cave-aesthetic register the wider property is built around — treatment rooms with the same volcanic-cliff architectural language, with treatments inspired by Greek wellness traditions and named for the goddess of love and beauty. The signature Hot Volcanic Stones Massage combines aromatherapy with Swedish massage techniques, drawing on Santorini's volcanic geology for the heated stones programme. Relaxation massages, body and face therapies, bespoke facials and the wider rejuvenation register run across the spa menu. The heated infinity pool with swim-up bar suspended above the caldera is the property's principal shared amenity — pool deck with double sun loungers, the glass-wall design that frames the caldera view from the water level, and the legendary swim-up bartenders whose service has been singled out in multiple guest reviews.

  • The dining programme runs across two Aestian-operated venues:

  • Esperisma Bar-Restaurant sits adjacent to the hotel on the caldera cliff. The programme delivers elevated Mediterranean fine dining under contemporary technique, with a degustation menu journey alongside à la carte options. The cocktail programme — separately acclaimed — reimagines local Santorini flavours through bespoke mixology; cocktails alone are worth visiting Esperisma for. The atmospheric setting with sunset views over the caldera makes the dinner reservation one of the property's most editorially flagship evening anchors.

  • Rizes Gastro Taverna sits just steps further along the cliff — an upscale interpretation of the traditional Greek gastro taverna register. Farm-to-table ingredients drawn from the Aestian network of local Santorini producers, underground wine cellar with curated Santorini and Cycladic wines, wine and olive oil tastings paired with authentic dishes, long marble communal table for tasting experiences. The Rizes programme is editorially significant: it delivers the traditional Greek register with contemporary refinement, avoiding both the strict-tourist-taverna kitsch and the over-elevated fine-dining detachment that affects much of Santorini's mid-range dining.

  • Made-to-order breakfast is served in-suite each morning — eggs, fresh fruit, cereal, yoghurt, fresh juice, homemade cake, and the property's verifiable "best falafel" anchor. Most categories include the in-suite breakfast option; some include the made-to-order à la carte breakfast at Esperisma's terrace.

  • The wider Santorini cultural and culinary circuit runs from the doorstep. Fira itself carries the Archaeological Museum, the Megaro Gyzi Museum, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira, and the bus terminal connecting the island. Oia (7 km north, the famously photographed sunset village) is a 25-minute drive or a 9-10 km caldera cliff walk for fit hikers. Imerovigli (the mid-arc village with Skaros Rock and the Anastasi chapel) is 2.8 km north along the caldera arc. Ormos Athinios Port carries the principal ferry connections from Athens-Piraeus and the wider Cyclades; Santorini International Airport (JTR) sits 9 minutes by car for international and domestic flights.

  • Worth the journey for: travellers wanting the caldera-cliff view combined with Fira town proximity — Athina is one of the few Santorini luxury properties that delivers both the cosmopolitan-town adjacency and the genuine cliff-edge editorial experience; couples and honeymooners drawn to the cave-style architecture, the Aphrodite Spa, and the private candlelight balcony dinner; design-conscious travellers attracted to Yiannis Tzortzos's 2019-2020 renovation and the dual architectural register; gastronomy travellers attracted to the Esperisma + Rizes dual-restaurant Aestian programme; philanthropic travellers attracted to the property's structural MSF commitment. Less so for: travellers wanting beachside or beach-adjacent accommodation (Athina is a cliff-top property, not a beach hotel — Santorini's beaches sit at Perissa, Kamari, Vlychada on the opposite side of the island); guests prioritising direct caldera-cliff isolation over town proximity (the more isolated Oia and Imerovigli properties deliver this register); winter travellers (verify seasonal closure with property — existing CMS shows December-February closure).
