Introducing Greece

Greece is twice the size most visitors realise — a mainland that runs from the snow-clad Pindus Mountains in the northwest to the Mani peninsula in the south, plus a constellation of islands distributed across two seas (the Aegean to the east, the Ionian to the west) that includes more inhabited islands than any other European country. Each region carries a distinct cultural inheritance: the cliff-edge cave-house Cycladic architecture of Santorini and Mykonos, the Venetian neoclassical legacy of Corfu and Zakynthos in the Ionian, the Byzantine fortress-cities of the Peloponnese, the stone-built mountain villages of Epirus, the Catholic-Orthodox dual heritage of Syros at the centre of the Cyclades, the Bronze Age archaeology of Crete and Akrotiri, and the urban density of Athens with the Acropolis as its civic and visual anchor.

The Boutique Hotel Club's Greek inventory deliberately spans this breadth. Members access properties across fifteen distinct regions — from the volcanic-cliff caldera-arc of Santorini to the car-free UNESCO village of Mikro Papigo deep in the Pindus, from the cosmopolitan Mykonos beach-club circuit to the wellness-and-Byzantine Mystras, from the Belle Époque grandeur of Spetses in the Saronic Gulf to the family-run Cycladic scale of Syros. The choice is character rather than tier: the inventory carries the country's geographic and cultural range deliberately.

The Cyclades
Onar Andros stone hideaway with private plunge pool and pergola set into the Achla valley slopes, Andros 📍

The Cyclades

The most-photographed island chain in the Aegean, with BHC inventory across seven Cycladic islands. Santorini carries the densest single-island inventory globally — fourteen BHC properties anchored by IKIES Santorini, opened by the Pittas family in 1999 in fourteen cliff-cave Captain houses at the entrance of Oia. Mykonos delivers the cosmopolitan beach-club circuit; Paros the slower Cycladic alternative; Ios the southern-Cycladic anchor at Agalia Luxury Suites (named Europe's Best Beach or Coastal Hotel by the Boutique Hotel Club in 2019); Andros the wildest landscape at Onar Andros in the Achla Natura 2000 reserve (carrying the same BHC Award from the same year); Syros, the administrative capital of the archipelago with its neoclassical Ermoupoli, anchors at Pino di Loto in Kini (named Europe's Best Romantic Retreat by the Boutique Hotel Club in 2022).

Athens and the Greek mainland

The Greek capital sits at the centre of the country's urban, archaeological and gastronomic life. BHC's Athens inventory anchors in the working-creative Psiri district at 18 Micon Str. — a fifteen-room 1950s warehouse conversion built around the 3 Elements design philosophy with a top-floor Acropolis Loft framing the Parthenon. Beyond Athens, the mainland carries BHC inventory in two editorially distinct regions: the Peloponnese at Mystras (Euphoria Retreat), and the Pindus Mountains at Zagori, where Mikro Papigo 1700 anchors the car-free UNESCO village of Papigo (named Europe's Most Sustainable Hotel by the Boutique Hotel Club in 2021).

The Saronic Gulf and Ionian Islands

Two ferry-accessible alternatives to the Aegean. The Saronic Gulf carries the historic island of Spetses with Poseidonion Grand Hotel — the fifty-two-room Belle Époque landmark opened in 1914 as Greece's first hotel to offer spa treatments. The Ionian Islands carry distinct Venetian-influenced heritage: Corfu at Delfino Blu Wellness Boutique Hotel above Agios Stefanos beach in the northwest (named Europe's Best Beach or Coastal Hotel by the Boutique Hotel Club in 2022), and Zakynthos at Paliokaliva Village in Tsilivi (named Europe's Best Apartment Hotel by the Boutique Hotel Club in the same year).

Sporades and Crete

The northern Aegean delivers the Northern Sporades archipelago — protected marine park, the largest in the Mediterranean — anchored at The Infinity 180 Luxury Suites by the Wood family on a Pagiri hilltop in Alonissos. Crete sits at Greece's southern edge as the largest of the Greek islands; see the destinations grid above for the current BHC Crete inventory.

When to visit

May through October is the principal Greek operating season. The Cycladic and Ionian islands carry the peak visitor density in July and August — heat, day-tripper traffic, and peak pricing are all real. May, late September, and October deliver the shoulder windows that align the photograph with the experience. The mainland regions — Athens, Mystras, Zagori — operate year-round. Zagori in particular delivers genuine winter: snow on the high villages, wood-fired stone-floored taverns. Greek Orthodox Easter (late April or early May) is the cultural anchor of the Greek year.
