Six waterfront apartments at Saplunara on Mljet's quiet east — Ana and Ivo's family property, with owner-cooked dinners at the Ante's Place konoba.

Collections:

Need To Know

  • Six waterfront units across the property: four apartments (50–86m²) and two studios (30–35m²); sleeping 2–4 plus infant per unit
  • Open mid-May through October; closed in winter
  • Family-friendly — apartments include kitchens and private balconies on most units; cots and pet accommodation available
  • Our favourite rooms: the two 86m² Ortensia Love and Lavender Touch deluxe apartments for families needing two-bedroom space and the largest private balconies; the 30m² Touch of Infinity studio for couples who want direct entry from the room straight into the infinity pool. Avoid the 35m² Garden Secret studio if you want a separate sleeping zone — it is a single-room layout
  • Ante's Place, the on-site konoba run by owner Ana, is the property's restaurant and the main evening option in Saplunara; book ahead in peak season
  • Direct access to Saplunara sand beach, one of the few proper sand beaches on Mljet's rocky coast; the infinity pool is on the same waterfront plot

Check in - Check out

Check in from 14:00; check out before 12:00.

We Love

  • Ana personally cooks at Ante's Place, the property's on-site konoba: Croatian home cooking from the owner's kitchen, with daily-caught fish carved at the table
  • Saplunara's sand beach is one of the few on Mljet's mostly-rocky coast and sits a 60-second walk from the apartments. The village name comes from the Latin sabulum, meaning sand
  • The infinity pool on the same waterfront plot as the apartments and the konoba, with the Saplunara sand beach on the other side
  • Ivo's boat trips into the bays and coves around eastern Mljet. The owner takes guests out personally, with no operator middleman
  • The Touch of Infinity studio's direct pool entrance: open the door of your unit and the infinity pool is the next step
  • Saplunara sits at Mljet's quiet eastern end, well clear of the National Park crowds on the island's western half

Origins

PineTree opened on the small Saplunara sand bay at the eastern end of Mljet, where the village has been a working fishing community for centuries. Ana and Ivo run the operation themselves: Ivo handling the apartments and the boats, Ana cooking at the on-site konoba Ante's Place. The six units across the family-owned waterfront plot sit beside the only proper sand beach on Mljet's mostly-rocky coast. The Croatian konoba — a traditional family-run tavern — is the dining model rather than a hotel restaurant; the apartments are self-catering with their own kitchens. The scale is intentionally small.

Top Secret

The cave on Mljet's south coast that local tradition identifies as Calypso's — where the nymph held Odysseus for seven years before he escaped to Ithaca — is a short boat trip from PineTree. There are competing claims for the cave around the Mediterranean, but this is the only one with the story still attached.

The Review

PineTree Boutique Apartments is the family-owned alternative to a hotel stay on Mljet. Six waterfront apartments and studios share a single plot at the eastern end of the island, in the small fishing village of Saplunara, with the owners' on-site Croatian konoba Ante's Place at the centre. The model is more like a small village within a village than a hotel: kitchens in each unit, infants and pets welcome, owners Ana and Ivo on site, no concierge desk between guests and the family that runs everything.

The six units split into two studios (Garden Secret and Touch of Infinity, both around 30m²) and four apartments (Precious Moments 50m², Jasmin Lush 70m², and the two largest Ortensia Love and Lavender Touch at 86m² each). All units have sea views and most have private balconies; the larger apartments add full kitchens, separate living rooms, and dining areas suitable for groups. Touch of Infinity studio opens directly onto the infinity pool. The interiors run white-on-natural-wood with restrained colour accents, the format of a family-built property rather than a designed-by-committee hotel.

Ante's Place, the on-site konoba, is the editorial centre. Owner Ana cooks personally, running a kitchen that crosses traditional and contemporary Croatian: daily-caught fish carved at the table on wooden boards, Josper-grilled vegetables from the property's garden, homemade pasta and a careful Croatian wine list. The konoba (a Dalmatian-tavern format) is open to non-guests and books out in peak season. The apartments include full kitchens, which means breakfast and lunch can be self-catered from the village; Ana's restaurant covers the evening offering. The model works because Saplunara doesn't have multiple competing restaurants — Ante's Place is the village's main dining venue.

Saplunara is at Mljet's quiet eastern end, roughly 40 minutes by road from the National Park entrance at Polače on the island's western half. The village is built around a small sand bay (the name itself comes from the Latin sabulum, meaning sand) and the property occupies the waterfront plot beside it. The walking distance from each apartment to the beach is under a minute. Mljet's western half holds the headline attractions: the two saltwater lakes joined by a narrow channel; the 12th-century Benedictine monastery on Sveta Marija islet in Veliko Jezero; the cave that local tradition identifies as Calypso's hiding place from the Odyssey; and the network of cycling and walking trails through pine forest. Saplunara holds the quieter end of the proposition.

Worth the journey for: couples and small families who want a self-catered Croatian-island base with owner-cooked dinners and a sand beach on the doorstep, and travellers prepared to take Mljet on its own terms rather than as a Dubrovnik day-trip. Less so for: anyone wanting hotel infrastructure with full concierge and daily housekeeping commentary, or anyone whose Croatian-island agenda is Hvar's nightlife and Korčula's old town. PineTree is the small, family-run, eastern-end-of-a-quiet-island proposition. It is what it is, and what it is suits a specific traveller well.
