Origins
Chillax sits in the heart of Bangkok's old town, Phra Nakhon, on a quiet lane off Samsen Road a short walk from the traveller hub of Khao San Road and the Chao Phraya river. Despite the "resort" in its name, it is a compact, six-storey city hotel, and it is built around a single, unashamedly romantic idea: every room has its own private whirlpool bath.
The rooms come in three sizes and two distinct looks, a darker, moodier Modern Dark and a lighter Colonial Bright, each with a king bed and a semi-open bathroom built for couples. The social heart of the hotel is up top, where a sixth-floor rooftop infinity pool and bar look out over the temples and rooftops of the old quarter, a fine spot for a sunset drink after a day's sightseeing. Down below there is a Thai restaurant, a lounge bar, a spa and a small gym, and a bright, high-ceilinged lobby that sets a more designed tone than the hotel's modest bracket might suggest. What guests tend to remember, though, is the service, warm and personal, and the location: quiet enough to sleep, yet minutes on foot from the Grand Palace, the river and the buzz of Khao San. It is an independent, characterful base for exploring old Bangkok, romantic without taking itself too seriously.
Top Secret
Head up to the rooftop pool at dusk: as the light goes, the Golden Mount and the old-town temples light up on the skyline, and the sixth-floor bar is one of the few places in the quarter to see them from above, drink in hand.
The Review
Chillax makes no secret of what it is: a romantic little city hotel in the heart of old Bangkok, built around the fact that every room has its own whirlpool bath. Despite the "resort" name it is a compact, six-storey property on a quiet lane off Samsen Road, and its appeal is a mix of couples-focused rooms, a good rooftop pool and one of the best old-town locations in the city.
The rooms are the hook. Each of the roughly one hundred has a private jacuzzi tub, in a semi-open bathroom designed for two, and comes in two looks, a darker Modern Dark or a lighter Colonial Bright, with king beds and contemporary styling. It is worth knowing the open-plan bathrooms suit couples more than they do friends sharing, and that parts of the hotel show their age. The clear highlight is the sixth-floor rooftop, where an infinity pool and bar look out over the temples and rooftops of the old quarter, at its best as the sun goes down.
The location is the other strength. Chillax sits on a calm side street yet within easy walking distance of Khao San Road, the Chao Phraya river ferries, the Grand Palace and the Golden Mount, making it an excellent base for exploring old Bangkok on foot, helped by a free shuttle to the main sights. Warm, personal service is the thing guests praise most, from the welcome drink to help planning the days.
A few honest points. This is a mid-sized city hotel rather than a boutique retreat, it sits a fair way from the Skytrain and metro in an area of heavy traffic, and the on-site restaurants draw mixed reviews. But for a characterful, independent and genuinely romantic base in the old town, with a private whirlpool bath and a rooftop pool over the temples, Chillax is a likeable choice in a hard-to-beat location.
