Origins
When manager Theodore's father bought the property in 1987 as a summer holiday home, it was used to press grapes and store wine. At that time there were no hotels in the area, nor any buildings closer than 200 metres. The site sat above the caldera-edge village of Imerovigli, with the volcanic cliff falling away to the Aegean and the family's grape press at the heart of the property's working life.
After three decades of family use, in 2016 the Theodore family decided to convert the loved home into a boutique hotel. With two engineers and a decorator in the family, the conversion was led in-house: nine suites carved and hollowed out of the volcanic cliff face in the traditional Cycladic yposkafa (cave-house) style, each individually decorated with natural rocks, driftwood and soft tones. The arrangement preserved the protective architectural form that originally sheltered Santorini residents from harsh winter conditions and earthquakes, while introducing contemporary comfort, Beautyrest® by Simmons mattresses, organic toiletries, and private plunge pools or hot tubs at every suite.
The property has run continuously under family ownership from the 2016 opening, with the Theodore family on-site through each season. The result is one of Imerovigli's most genuinely intimate properties — nine adults-only suites, no formal restaurant, all dining served in-suite or on private terraces, a small dedicated team rather than a corporate hospitality footprint. The 6× TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence run (2016-2021) and the 2018 Boutique Hotel Club Awards Europe's Best Honeymoon Hideaway recognition both attest to the small-team consistency.
Top Secret
The private plunge pool in the Grand Honeymoon Suite is one of the property's most distinctive anchors — set directly into the cave, completely secluded, with the cave-mouth framing the caldera, the volcano and the sunset. The Grand Honeymoon Suite carries 70 m² of plush comfort, two bathrooms, two sofas in the living room, and the private balcony with the cave plunge pool as its centrepiece. Few competing Cycladic properties carry a genuine cave-mouth pool with this view configuration.
The wider Theodore family operation runs on a small-team principle worth knowing about. The property has no formal restaurant — every meal is served in-suite or on the private balcony of each suite. Candlelight dinners can be arranged in advance, served on the suite terrace with the caldera as the backdrop. The king's breakfast is one of the property's most-cited daily anchors: freshly brewed coffee, organic teas, freshly squeezed juices, fresh fruits and jams, Greek yogurt and honey, locally sourced organic produce — delivered to your balcony or in-room, however you prefer to start the day.

The Review
Santorini's caldera-arc runs along the western edge of the island — the cliff-top villages of Fira, Imerovigli and Oia carved into the volcanic cliffs, with the famously photographed sunsets over the volcano below. Imerovigli sits at the mid-arc, between Fira (the main town, 1.6 km south) and Oia (the famously photographed sunset village, 10 km north). The village occupies the highest point of the caldera cliff, with Skaros Rock medieval fortress ruins jutting out into the Aegean directly below, and a noticeably quieter character than either Fira's commercial-centre buzz or Oia's photographer-crush sunset hour.
Cocoon Suites occupies a privileged position at the base of Imerovigli village — accessed down steep and winding stone stairs from the main village pedestrian artery (luggage assistance on arrival is the standard arrival sequence). The position carries a distinctive trade-off: the cliff-cave seclusion that has become Cocoon's editorial signature, balanced against the practical reality that arrival and departure require navigating the stone stairs. Once down at the property, the world above effectively disappears — a sensory shift one of the property's most-cited guest review themes.
The 9 cave suites are individually designed across a range of categories. The Junior Suite Hot Tub Sea View (28 m², queen-size bed) is the entry-tier accommodation; the Executive Suite with Cave Hot Tub (38 m², king-size bed, hot tub set under the cave overlooking caldera and volcano) and the Honeymoon Suite Hot Tub Sea View (38 m², for couples seeking intimate privacy) sit in the mid-tier; the Deluxe Honeymoon Suite Hot Tub Sea View (38 m², with large daybed on the private balcony) carries an upgraded amenity profile; the Grand Cave Suite Hot Tub Sea View (70 m², traditional Canava character, cave bathroom, small kitchen, outdoor heated hot tub) and the Grand Honeymoon Suite Plunge Pool Sea View (70 m², two bathrooms, two sofas, cave plunge pool) carry the largest footprints. Every suite features a private hot tub or plunge pool, the Beautyrest® by Simmons mattress, substantive private balconies framing the caldera and sunset, and the cave-art-style interior with natural rocks, driftwood and soft tones.
The amenity inventory is deliberately small-footprint and intimate — no shared infinity pool, no formal restaurant, no bar deck. The property operates on the principle that every guest's experience runs through their own suite and their own private terrace. 24-hour concierge service handles the wider Santorini circuit (sailing charters, wine tastings, archaeological tours, transfers); in-suite massage and beauty treatments can be arranged for individuals or couples; yoga and pilates sessions run in the unique scenery of Imerovigli with qualified professionals. The eCheck-in system handles the arrival paperwork before guests arrive on the property.
The king's breakfast is the property's daily editorial anchor. Freshly brewed coffee, organic teas, freshly squeezed juices, fresh fruits and jams, Greek yogurt and honey, a wide variety of locally sourced organic produce — served either on the private balcony overlooking the caldera, or in-room. Candlelight dinners can be arranged in advance, with the chef preparing scrumptious organic meals using local produce, served on the suite terrace as the sun sets over the volcano. Nespresso machines in every suite handle the all-day caffeine needs.
Wedding and elopement bookings are one of the property's most substantial booking categories. Cocoon Suites specialises in intimate events — micro-weddings with loved ones, "just us" elopements, surprise proposals, birthday celebrations, pre-wedding gatherings, anniversary and vow-renewal ceremonies. The dedicated team handles the practicalities (officiant, photographer, catering, decoration), with the property's caldera-edge position as the backdrop. The 9-suite footprint allows couples to book the entire property for their wedding party, with the village of Imerovigli — perched above the world-famous caldera in clifftop arrangement — providing the romantic Cycladic setting.
The wider Imerovigli and Santorini circuit runs from the property. Imerovigli village centre is a short stone-stair climb back up to the main pedestrian artery, with restaurants, tavernas and the Skaros Rock medieval fortress walk (the famous promontory jutting out into the caldera, accessible by a 20-minute hike). Aegeon taverna sits a few minutes' walk away — a traditional Greek tapas lunch venue worth visiting. Fira (the main town, with the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira, the Megaro Gyzi Museum, the cable car to the Old Port) is 1.6 km south by car or a 25-30 minute walk along the caldera-edge path. Oia (the famously photographed sunset village, with its concentration of artisan boutiques and the Castle of Oia at the western cliff edge) is 10 km north / 25 minutes by car, or 9 km by the famous Oia-to-Fira caldera-rim walk that passes directly through Imerovigli. Akrotiri Archaeological Site — the Bronze Age "Pompeii of Santorini," buried by the volcanic eruption circa 1600 BC, thought to have inspired the Atlantis legend — sits 25 minutes south. Santorini's wine region with its volcanic-terroir Assyrtiko wineries (Santo Wines, Domaine Sigalas, Estate Argyros) runs across the south and centre of the island, all within 30 minutes by car.
The Byzantine churches of Imerovigli — the small blue-domed chapels distributed along the caldera-edge path, including the Panagia Malteza above Skaros Rock and the Agios Ioannis chapel along the cliff walk — are some of the most photographed in the Cyclades. The wider Santorini cultural circuit runs from the doorstep: the Castle of Oia, the Monastery of Profitis Ilias at 567 metres (the island's highest viewpoint, accessible by road from Pyrgos), the Red Beach and White Beach at the southern tip, the wine cooperatives distributed across the volcanic terroir.
Worth the journey for: couples and honeymooners drawn to the genuine cave-suite architecture combined with private plunge pools and the caldera-edge view configuration; travellers wanting the adults-only intimate-resort character with a small team rather than corporate hospitality; multi-day visitors attracted to the in-suite candlelight dining and the king's breakfast on the balcony; design-conscious travellers attracted to the cave-art interior with natural rocks and driftwood; wedding-and-elopement couples drawn to the 9-suite full-property buyout option; travellers prioritising Imerovigli quiet over the busier Fira and Oia village atmospheres. Less so for: travellers requiring formal restaurant and bar service in dedicated dining rooms (Cocoon operates exclusively in-suite); families with young children (the property is strictly adults-only 18+); guests with mobility constraints (the property is accessed down steep stone stairs from the main village pedestrian artery); winter travellers (the property closes November through March); guests seeking large-resort amenities (Cocoon's footprint is deliberately compact at 9 suites, with no shared pool or large communal facilities).
