Expert Review
Origins
‘Emaho’, we are told, comes from the Tibetan word for joy, or wonder. The owners keep this philosophy of ‘Emaho’ at the heart of the hotel’s ethos. They wanted to create the ultimate space for couples to celebrate relationships, rekindle romance and to fall in love all over again.
Top Secret
The owners provide guests with a private boat out to a deserted sandbar where you can sip champagne in the afternoon sun.
The Review
Located on Fiji's second largest Island, this is perhaps the most intimate destination we have ever visited. Only two couples occupy the resort at any one time, giving the hotel the most remarkable feeling of privacy. This place forms a bubble in which you and your loved one are the only inhabitants.
Take a stroll down the two-kilometer private beach, taking in the magnificence of the surroundings, admiring the crystal clarity of the turquoise sea and basking in the warm glow of the sun. This truly is the perfect honeymoon destination, a fact not lost on the resort. The hotel is designed in the traditional Balinese Pavilion style architecture. Perched on a small hill between rainforest and sea, the resort feels very much attuned to its unique and exotic surroundings.
In the evening, guests can enjoy a candlelit ‘under the stars’ experience; a sumptuous dinner beneath the myriad stars of the southern sky, followed by freshly picked lemongrass tea. The food at Emaho Sekawa is particularly noteworthy, with local specialties such as Kokoda providing a nirvana for seafood lovers. The island’s large Indian community means the resort is awash with creative fusions that would content the world’s most discerning vegetarians.
The hotel is a short boat ride from the stunning Namena Marine Reserve, which claims the title of ‘soft coral capital of the world’. Its 100ft visibility and near zero pollution enables a truly unique diving opportunity. The hotel has a fully trained Padi Divemaster on site, so lack of experience need not be a hinderance to exploring the aquatic jungle that lies below the waves. You can kayak up the nearby river, or trek through the jungle while the hotel staff guide the way and explain the folklore of the area, the significance of fauna and the utility of the flora.
