Origins
The land was originally occupied by Franciscan monks, dating back to the 1700’s. In 1893, the hotel first opened and was later transformed into a hospitality haven for celebrities. Current owner, Ty Warner, honours the long and storied history of the ranch, returning it to its golden era of 1930’s Hollywood.
Top Secret
Guests must ask for a tour of the underground wine cellar from sommelier Tristan – with over 12,000 bottles, some dating back to WWII, it is simply fascinating.
The Review
Making your way up the elongated driveway, high lush hedges on either side, you immediately get a sense of the seclusion and privacy that awaits. Greeted like royalty, waved threw to the hacienda, draped with striking fuchsia bougainvillea - you are welcomed to utopia. San Ysidro Ranch is a delight for the senses. The smells of rose and lavender, rosemary and Meyer lemon waft through the air and greet you at every turn, enhancing every moment.
The beauty that surrounds you is breathtaking; with magnificently maintained gardens frequented by hummingbirds and honeybees offering a musical backdrop to the panoramic views of the Pacific ocean and the Santa Ynez mountains. When you close your eyes you can hear earth breathing here and your heart beats in tune.
The service is flawless, with old-world style and grace. Whether it be in-room, poolside or in one of the ranches fabulous restaurants, established staff - whose love and pride of the Ranch shine in their acts of service - cater to a really well-heeled clientele, making guests feel incredibly welcome and special throughout every part of their stay.
The food ranges from elevated classics to modern cuisine, using fresh, organic ingredients grown on site from the chef’s garden. Established Chef Matt Johnson has been cooking at the ranch for almost 15 years and his delicious food is complimented by the charming on site sommelier, Tristan Pitre, who’s young light-hearted approach pairs the expansive collection of old world and new year wines. Guests can choose to dine under the stars next to warm fireplaces and twinkling lights amongst the trees that surround them; or indoors for a cozy, romantic ambience midst exposed stone walls, stained glass windows and rough-hewn wood beams. There is also the option for private dining in the Old Adobe, which dates back to 1825 – providing a dining experience encapsulating rustic elegance.
Each cottage is unique, with different designs curated by the owner himself. Four poster beds, luxurious bathrooms, outdoor showers and a jacuzzi are on offer in every cottage, with some boasting their own private swimming pools. Textured wallpaper, antique lamps, an English garden in the Churchill room; majestic views that the Kennedys once enjoyed on their honeymoon - one cannot help but feel inspired at this sacred site who’s grounds were explored by previous celebrities and today draw the same appeal.
Discretion and luxury - a true refuge from life that once visited, guests will seek to come back again and again.
