Introducing Galle

Galle is the jewel of Sri Lanka's south coast: a walled Dutch colonial port on a rocky promontory, wrapped by the Indian Ocean on three sides, and the most atmospheric town on the island. Where much of the south is about beaches, Galle is about history and texture, four centuries of Portuguese, Dutch and British rule preserved inside ramparts that have outlasted them all.

The heart of it is the Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living quarter rather than a museum: a grid of coral-stone streets, churches, villas and warehouses now given over to galleries, cafes, jewellers and small hotels, walkable end to end and best at dusk when the light softens and the crowds thin on the walls. It is one of the best-preserved colonial towns in Asia.

Beyond the Fort, Galle is the gateway to the south. The beaches run east and west, Unawatuna and Dalawella close by, Mirissa and its whales an hour on; inland rise tea and cinnamon estates and the calm of Koggala Lake. The town makes a natural base for the whole coast, pairing a day on the sand with an evening among the ramparts, and it repays anyone who lingers past the day-tripper hours.

Where to Stay in Galle

Galle divides between the Fort, the beaches and the green hinterland behind, and the choice sets the tone of a stay. The Fort itself is for those who want history at the door, walkable streets and sunset on the walls; the coast is for beach days; and the tea-and-jungle country inland, a short drive from both, is for privacy and quiet. The club's two Galle hotels sit in that last camp, away from the crowds. Kahanda Kanda is a design hotel of seventeen individually styled villas on a working tea estate above Koggala Lake, the creation of British designer George Cooper, adults-focused and polished. Why House, a little nearer Unawatuna, is a smaller, family-run, ten-room house in a three-acre walled garden, informal where Kahanda Kanda is precise. Both are inland, with the beaches a short drive or cycle away. The Fort also has a handful of small hotels within the walls for those who want to wake inside the old town itself, trading garden quiet for history on the doorstep.

When to Go

The south coast runs on the dry season between December and April, the time for calm seas, clear skies and whale-watching off Mirissa; this is also the busy, priciest peak. The southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher water between May and September, cheaper and quieter, with the shoulder months either side a fair compromise. For the Fort, any season works, since its appeal is stone rather than sand.

Getting There and Around

Galle is about two hours by car from Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, much of it on the southern expressway, or a scenic two-and-a-half hours by coastal train. Within the Fort, everything is walkable. For the beaches and the inland estates, tuk-tuks and hotel transfers do the work, and many hotels lend bicycles for the short, flat run down to the coast.
