Expert Review
Origins
Why House sits in the village of Mihiripenna, in the lush belt of southern Sri Lanka behind the beaches between Galle and Unawatuna. It is a small, family-run boutique hotel built around a three-acre walled garden, the kind of place designed to feel like a private house rather than a hotel, where the informality is the point.
That ethos comes from the way it is run. Henrietta and a close-knit team of around fifteen look after ten rooms and no more, which lets the service stay personal: a welcome with a drink in hand, shared dinners for those who want them, solitude for those who do not. The garden, planted with palms, fruit and spice trees and some three hundred species in all, is the heart of it, with a pool, hammocks and shaded corners to lounge and dine. Nigella, the resident dachshund, completes the household feel. It is a house with a relaxed, sociable character, equally at home with families and couples, and a short walk from the south coast.
Top Secret
Henrietta is known for laying on bespoke entertainments; one recent turn was a tuk-tuk scavenger hunt across the area, with teams mixing Sri Lankan cocktails, identifying precious stones and designing batik handkerchiefs as they went.

The Review
Why House is one of those small southern-Sri-Lankan hotels that runs more like a generous private home than a business, and is the better for it. Set in the village of Mihiripenna, a little inland of the coast between Galle and Unawatuna, it gathers ten rooms around a three-acre walled garden of palms, fruit and spice trees, and pitches itself squarely at informality: luxury without the starch.
The garden is the centre of things. More than three acres and some 300 plant species deep, it is full of birdsong, butterflies and hammocks, with a pool to swim and plenty of corners to lounge or dine. The ten rooms come in four types, from the Cabanas and Garden Bungalows to the Garden Villa and, the pick of them, the three Main House Suites with their four-poster beds, high ceilings, antique furniture and glass-roofed bathrooms. They are individually designed and characterful; note there are no bathtubs, and the house sits inland, a 10 to 15-minute walk or a complimentary tuk-tuk from the beach.
What makes the place is the way it is hosted. Henrietta and her team, some fifteen strong, run it with genuine warmth, gathering guests for drinks or a shared dinner from a strong multi-cuisine kitchen, with no pressure to take part if you would rather keep to yourselves. The detail is what people remember: a welcome ceremony, daily afternoon tea and cake, thrice-weekly aqua-aerobics, yoga and a visiting Ayurvedic therapist, and Nigella the house dachshund underfoot. It is notably good with children, with interconnecting rooms and staff happy to help, without tipping into a kids' club.
It will not suit those set on a beachfront room or a large full-service resort: Why House is small, inland and informal by design. But for a relaxed family or couples' base on the south coast, within easy reach of Galle, the beaches and the lake, run with real care and personality, it is among the most likeable places to stay around Galle.
