Introducing Naousa

Naousa anchors the social side of Paros. The Cycladic fishing village on the island's north coast spent the 1990s and 2000s quietly transforming into one of Greece's most concentrated boutique-hotel and fine-dining clusters — without losing the harbour, the half-submerged Venetian castle at its mouth, the whitewashed lanes of the Old Town, or the small fishing boats still tied at the quay each morning.

The Kastelli — the 15th-century Venetian fortress partially sunken into the harbour entrance — anchors the postcard. Naousa Bay reaches east to Kolymbithres (the lunar granite-boulder cove that's Paros's most photographed beach), Monastiri (the paradise beach inside Paros Park's nature preserve) and Lageri further around. Inland from the port, the narrow flagstone lanes hold a concentration of restaurants, cocktail lounges and boutique stores that runs Greece's biggest luxury-shopping presence outside Mykonos.

Naousa sits 12 kilometres north of Paroikia — Paros's main port and the Paros National Airport.

The harbour and Old Town

The Naousa harbour opens onto a broad semi-enclosed bay, with the Kastelli — the 15th-century Venetian fortress, built to defend the village from pirate attacks, now partially submerged — anchoring the harbour entrance. The short stone walkway out to the fortress carries the canonical sunset view back toward the village. Behind the quay, the Old Town's whitewashed flagstone lanes climb the slope through small blue-domed churches, hidden courtyards and the cluster of fine-dining restaurants and cocktail lounges that defines contemporary Naousa. The Panagia Faneromeni church crowns the small hill above the village; the Moraitis Winery sits at the eastern edge.

Bohemian Luxury Boutique Hotel sits a few minutes inland on Alonia, a seventeen-room adults-only configuration with a pool deck above the village rooftops.

The Naoussa Bay beaches

Naousa Bay holds Paros's most distinctive beaches. Kolymbithres — the lunar landscape of smooth granite boulders forming small sandy inlets and natural turquoise pools — sits across the bay from town, reachable by car (10 minutes) or water taxi (5-7 minutes from the harbour). Monastiri, just beyond, sits inside the Paros Park nature preserve and pairs with a small monastery on the headland. Santa Maria to the east runs the kitesurfing and windsurfing programmes; Lageri further around is the rustic, clothing-optional beach. Piperi — the small sandy cove a short walk from the harbour — gives the closest swim to town with good snorkelling among the rocks.

When to visit

Naousa's season runs May to October. May-June delivers the village at its quietest — restaurants reopening, the harbour kafenions back in service, the beaches still uncrowded. July-August is when the social scene activates fully — the cocktail lounges and fine-dining restaurants book out weeks ahead, the harbour busy until late. September-early October matches May-June for weather with the added warm-sea swimming. Winter is essentially closed — most properties shut from late October to April.
