Origins

"But you have no experience, no training as a hotelier," Kostas's wife said when he told her he'd found the perfect spot for a luxury hotel on Corfu. Twenty-five years later, the property remains his unwavering passion — he still checks the tomatoes by hand on each delivery, and the same devotion threads through every operational detail. The hotel was named Europe's Best Beach or Coastal Hotel 2022 by the Boutique Hotel Club — an external recognition of the family-run hospitality model that has anchored the property since its opening in the mid-1990s.

Kostas designed and built the property himself on an empty dune above the Agios Stefanos shoreline in northwest Corfu — the quieter coast facing the Diapondia Islands (Othonoi, Erikoussa, Mathraki) across the Ionian Sea, one hour from bustling Corfu Town. The construction took five winters to complete: "because it is not courteous to carry out noisy building works in the summer."

The architecture honours the traditional Corfiot colour palette and Venetian architectural vocabulary — Corfu being the most architecturally distinct Ionian island anchored by its Venetian-British-French historical heritage (Corfu Old Town is UNESCO-listed for its Venetian fortifications and townscape). The property integrates reclaimed stone lining the pathways, carved stonework over the doors, handmade hardwood doors, and flourishing tropical gardens.

Top Secret

The property reads as classic Venetian-Corfiot heritage architecture but was actually built from scratch in the mid-1990s — the reclaimed stone lining the pathways, the carved stonework over the doors, and the handmade hardwood interiors were all sourced from Corfiot architectural salvage during the five-year construction period. The result is contemporary luxury accommodation rendered in architectural materials with genuine Corfiot provenance — a substantive operational distinction within the wider Greek hospitality inventory where heritage architecture often comes attached to genuine listed buildings with the corresponding operational constraints, or where new builds use modern materials with traditional veneer detailing.

The on-property provenance integration across the dining and spa programme anchors Delfino Blu's most distinctive operational signature. The honey, cheese and yoghurt served at breakfast are sourced directly from the owner's family farms on the Greek mainland — the verified family-farm-to-table integration that distinguishes the property from standard hotel sourcing. The breakfast spread integrates traditional Bougatsa (the Greek custard slice), fresh yoghurt, preserves, a cheese and meat buffet, and a tower of fruit. Each morning carries a new treat with the property's signature provenance storytelling. The beeswax soap in the bathroom amenity programme is handmade in-house by a staff member — another small but distinctive integration. The owner replaces "perfectly good furniture" in returning-guest rooms regularly, anchoring the broader operational philosophy of perpetual renewal even for guests who return year after year.

The Review

"Welcome Home," reads the mat on the threshold of the gates into Delfino Blu — apt because after a day or two, the property feels like yours. The 15-suite operation anchors the rare combination of self-contained resort scale (pool, spa, serviced beach, Half Board dining programme) with intimate family-run service character.

Corfu sits as the northernmost of the Ionian Islands and the most architecturally distinct Greek island — anchored by Corfu Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage), the legacy of 400 years of Venetian rule (1386-1797), and the broader British (1815-1864) and French historical layers that shape the island's distinctive Greco-European character. The island's architecture, cuisine, and broader cultural vocabulary distinguish Corfu substantively from the Cycladic and Cretan inventory — Venetian fortifications, French neoclassical buildings, British-built Spianada Square, and the broader Italianate-Greek heritage that anchors Corfu as Greece's most internationally-influenced island.

Northwest Corfu sits as the quieter coast of the island — anchored by the small fishing villages of Avliotes, Agios Stefanos, Arillas, and Sidari, with the Diapondia Islands (Othonoi, Erikoussa, Mathraki) visible across the channel. The position delivers a substantively quieter and more residential character than the busier southern and eastern coasts.

Delfino Blu occupies a privileged Agios Stefanos position above the sandy beach — direct beach access (0m) with views over the Ionian Sea toward the Diapondia Islands. The position delivers a defining anchor: walking-distance beach access and the property's substantial on-site amenity programme (pool, spa, serviced beach, Half Board dining) alongside the quieter operational character of the northwest coast.

The 15 suites and apartments distribute across 9 categories. The Honeymoon Suite (45 m²) anchors the romance-positioned configuration with its panoramic Diapondia Islands view from the large veranda. The Deluxe Family Apartments Type A and Type B (60 m², up to 6 guests) anchor the family-friendly footprint with two balconies each. The Garden View Suite, Junior Suite, and Superior Family Studios anchor the mid-tier suite inventory. The Superior Studios anchor the entry tier.

The dining programme operates at three venues. Kohili Restaurant anchors the property's signature à-la-carte open-air veranda — the 5-course Half Board menu changes nightly, with locally-sourced ingredients, island fish specialities, traditional Greek stews, and creative salads. Half Board guests are treated to the full 5-course experience as standard. The Pool Bar sits under rocky waterfalls by the outdoor heated pool. Mango Beach Bar runs cool drinks and Latin music at the beach. The famous Delfino Blu breakfast — best not taken too early — is a decadent spread of Bougatsa, fresh yoghurt, preserves, cheese, and meat buffet, cooked items, and the family-farm-sourced honey from the mainland.

The wellness programme runs at the hillside cave-atmosphere spa — built into the side of the hill with the distinctive subterranean spa ambience. The treatment menu integrates hydrotherapy, massage, facials, sea-salt body peeling, followed by a relaxing bath, and the property's signature state-of-the-art Rainforest shower. The wider wellness inventory includes an outdoor heated pool, hammam, and fitness centre.

The property holds substantive verified sustainability commitments: solar thermal heating systems for water and kitchen operation; reverse-osmosis water filtration; biological filtration system with underground irrigation using filtered greywater; biodegradable laundry detergents with linen air-drying; energy-saving lighting throughout; thermo-sound double-glazed windows for natural ventilation; full recycling programme (glass, paper, plastic, aluminum) with in-room recycling bins; and planned composting programme for organic kitchen waste. The property includes a disabled-accessible ground-floor room with adapted exterior — a rare verified accessibility commitment within the wider Greek boutique inventory.

The wider Corfu circuit runs from the property. Agios Stefanos Beach sits directly below (0m). Arillas Beach sits 1.5 km south. Canal d'Amour (the famous coastal rock-formation sea cave at Sidari) sits 6.5 km north, anchored by the famous narrow channel said to bring eternal love to couples who swim through it. Avliotes village and the surrounding northwest Corfu villages anchor the local Corfiot cultural circuit. Paleokastritsa (the famous monastery and beach concentration) sits 30-45 min drive south. Corfu Town (Kerkyra) with the UNESCO Old Town, the Old Fortress, the New Fortress, Spianada Square, Liston, the Archaeological Museum, and the Asian Art Museum sits 1 hour drive south. Pontikonisi (Mouse Island) and Vlacherna Monastery anchor the iconic Corfu photographic site at Kanoni. Achilleion Palace (Empress Elisabeth of Austria's villa) anchors the cultural-heritage circuit. The Diapondia Islands are accessible by boat from the northwest coast.

Worth booking for: couples and honeymooners attracted to the Boutique Hotel Club Award-winning operation and the Honeymoon Suite with panoramic Diapondia Islands view; families with children attracted to the Deluxe Family Apartments for up to 6 guests and the broader family-friendly amenity programme; wellness-focused travellers drawn to the hillside cave-atmosphere spa with the signature Rainforest shower; gastronomy travellers attracted to the Kohili Restaurant's 5-course Half Board menu changing nightly with the owner's family-farm provenance integration; eco-conscious guests attracted to the substantive verified sustainability programme (solar thermal, reverse osmosis, biological filtration, full recycling); travellers wanting, the quieter northwest Corfu coast over the busier southern and eastern resort concentrations; multi-day Corfu visitors wanting a base for the wider Ionian and Diapondia Islands circuit; guests with mobility considerations attracted to the rare verified disabled-accessible room and exterior. Less so for: travellers wanting Corfu Town walkability (Delfino Blu is northwest coast, 1 hour drive from Corfu Town); guests prioritising on-doorstep Venetian Old Town heritage architecture (the property is built in Corfiot-Venetian vocabulary but is northwest coast residential, not Old Town); winter travellers (property operates seasonal mid-May to mid-October only); guests prioritising adults-only operational character (Delfino Blu welcomes families); travellers prioritising chain-loyalty programme integration (Delfino Blu is independent family-run operation); guests wanting walkable nightlife and bar concentration (the northwest coast is quiet residential, not party-positioned — for nightlife consider Corfu Town or the south-east coast).
