Expert Review
Origins
When looking for a holiday home in 2002, Vanessa Branson and Howell James came across a dilapidated courtyard in one of Marrakech’s formerly great private homes and instantly fell in love with the atmospheric house. After a two-year renovation, El Fenn opened with six bedrooms. Since then twenty-two more rooms and suites, three swimming pools, a restaurant, bar, spa and library have been added thanks to the purchase of neighbouring riads and the expertise of renowned Moroccan architect Amine Kabbaj.
Top Secret
Guests are spoiled with scented candles and a selection of babouche slippers to choose from. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for the family of turtles that are given free reign around the courtyard.
The Review
You will find El Fenn tucked away down a side street on the edge of the Medina, with its thick walls and grand courtyards providing a peaceful sanctuary. This beautiful, stylish Riad has won the hearts of all its guests; from the colourful Moroccan carpets dressing the stitched, camel-leather floors to the exquisite rooftop terrace with a mesmerizing view of Marrakech.
Greeted with a mint tea, guests enjoy an array of rich reds and plush pinks, leading you to sun-bathed courtyards filled with trees, giant wicker lanterns and a chorus of singing birds. Warm saffrons and azures brighten up the palatial bedrooms and suites, with large windows welcoming the African sun and offering views of the lush courtyards. Each room is individually styled with open wood fireplaces, hand carved cedar ceilings, leather-lined walls and beautiful artisan-crafted plasterwork. It is this attention to detail that really sets the El Fenn apart.
After a busy day exploring the local Souks, guests can relax in large galleries dotted with vintage armchairs, hide away in the library or enjoy the candlelit spa, offering traditional beauty rituals with a luxurious twist. If that isn’t enough, the sprawling 70002 ft roof terrace has a dipping pool and daybeds with piles of cushions for its guests. Why not enjoy a pale glass of Moroccan Rosé at sunset and delight in the spine-tingling panoramas.
At the heart of El Fenn is its Traditional Moroccan cuisine and European dishes. Guests can order food any time of day, eating under the stars or in the grand dining room. The restaurant and bar hosts two fireplaces and light bounces off the ceilings, exposed to mirrored beams. Guests will delight in an exceptional buffet breakfast served on the roof-top, with everything from fresh orange juice to warm eggs, pancakes and homemade granola.
El Fenn is the romantic escape you have been looking for.
