Expert Review
Origins
Pino di Loto carries one of the deepest family heritage anchors in BHC's wider Cycladic inventory — a 150-year continuous family connection to the small hill of Lotos above Kini village in Syros. The property's great-grandfather Marin Rigouzzo — French consul of France and Belgium at the time — bought the land in the 19th century as his "shelter," anchoring his time around the small cellar where he would, by family tradition, "spend endless hours" enjoying glasses of wine under the shadow of the Pine Tree that gives the hotel its name (Pino di Loto — "Pine of the Lotos hill"). The family home was built around that original wine cellar, and the broader hotel property was developed around the same Pine Tree, which remains the property's editorial and architectural centrepiece more than a century later.
The hotel itself opened in 2007 as the realisation of a retirement dream by Marinos and Mary — Marin Rigouzzo's descendants — who worked with the architect George Evripiotis across 7 years of planning and construction to translate the family's hospitality vision into a 6-suite boutique configuration. Today the operation is run by their daughter Terezdina, the third-generation family operational anchor whose "barefoot welcome" has anchored consistent guest reviews. The continuity of the family operation across four generations (great-grandfather, grandparents, parents, daughter) is genuinely distinctive within the Cycladic luxury inventory.
The property holds MHTE registration 1144K10000735000 and operates as an adults-only boutique B&B with children welcomed from age 15. The accommodation distributes across two distinct categories: 4 Pino Suites (40 m² each, one-room configurations with queen-size beds enhanced by Coco-Mat 2-layer sleep systems, minimal bathrooms with rain showers) and 2 X_ecutive Suites (the newer 60 m² configurations with master bedrooms, separate living rooms, two bathrooms, and the property's signature outdoor private plunge mini-pools facing the Aegean). Every suite carries the consistent property amenities: Coco-Mat bedding, KORRES bathroom amenities, Guy Laroche bathrobes made especially for Pino di Loto, fully-equipped kitchenettes with all necessary utensils, Nespresso coffee machines, Bluetooth music docking stations, Netflix-enabled flat-screen TVs, and welcome wine and local-product platters on arrival.
Top Secret
The Pino Bar is the social heart of the property — and the venue where the property's distinctive "Pinodiloter" community gathers each evening. The bar runs a signature cocktail menu created exclusively for Pino di Loto by mixologist Konstantinos Vasilakopoulos, paired with local craft beers, Cycladic wines, and the property's afternoon platter service (San Michali ΠΟΠ cheese, local cured Louza meats, Cycladic dairy, fresh tomatoes). Current and repeat guests regularly mingle at the bar during sunset, with the venue operating as much as a "Kini social club" as a hotel amenity — anchoring the family-operation atmosphere that defines the property.
The X_ecutive Suite outdoor private plunge mini-pools are the property's most distinctive accommodation anchor. The 2 newest suites (60 m² each) carry private outdoor plunge pools positioned to face the "endless Greek blue" of the Aegean — the property's signature view configuration. The plunge-pool tier is the natural choice for honeymoons, anniversaries and milestone celebrations at the romance-led property scale.
The WellnesT programme operates by appointment with the wider Pino team — 5 different massage types (essential oils or hot stones), yoga and Pilates sessions (private or small group), Aqua Fitness lessons in the main pool, and the private Wellness Corner with Jacuzzi (bookable exclusively for 2 hours / 2 people at €200, including champagne and fruit). The private wellness corner anchors the property's couples-positioned hospitality alongside the regular hotel amenity programme.

The Review
Syros sits at the geographic and administrative heart of the Cyclades — historically the capital of the Cycladic islands, with Ermoupoli (also spelled Hermoupolis) serving as the central regional capital and the most architecturally significant town in the wider Cycladic chain. Unlike the Cycladic island circuit's more famously photographed destinations (Mykonos, Santorini, Paros), Syros has anchored its position as the quieter, more authentically Greek alternative — with the famous Ermoupoli neoclassical architecture (built by Catholic refugees from Chios during the 19th century Greek War of Independence), the Apollon Theatre (the smaller-scale recreation of Milan's La Scala), the Catholic upper town of Ano Syros, and the broader inland landscape of small villages, beaches and traditional tavernas that distinguish the island from the more cosmopolitan Cycladic destinations.
Pino di Loto occupies a privileged position on the west coast of Syros — set on a hillside above the small beach village of Kini, accessible via a scenic 15-minute drive from Ermoupoli ferry terminal across the central hills of the island. The position delivers a defining anchor: the property sits in a natural amphitheatre of rolling hills with the broader western Cyclades sunset orientation visible from every suite and from the bar and pool terraces. Manager Terezdina greets arriving guests "not with a formal sir or madame, but in her typical laidback barefoot fashion and with a beaming smile" — the welcome that has anchored consistent multi-year guest reviews and made the property a defining repeat-stay venue within BHC's Cycladic inventory.
The 6 suites distribute across the hillside in a tiered terraced layout — all suites set above and below the central pool, with each terrace positioned to deliver privacy and quiet alongside the consistent property amenities. The 4 Pino Suites (40 m², 2 pax) anchor the entry tier with one-room configurations: queen-size Coco-Mat beds, minimal rain-shower bathrooms, KORRES toiletries, fully-equipped kitchenettes with Nespresso coffee machines, Bluetooth music docking, Netflix-ready flat-screen TVs, mini-bar and refrigerator, and the wine-and-local-products welcome on arrival. The 2 X_ecutive Suites (60 m², 2-3 pax) sit at the upper tier as the property's flagship: master bedrooms with king-size Coco-Mat 4-layer sleep systems and pillow menus, separate living rooms, two bathrooms, and the signature outdoor private plunge mini-pools facing the Aegean.
The dining programme runs across the Pino Bar and Breakfast service. Breakfast operates from 09:00 to 12:00 — anchored in the property's late-breakfast philosophy ("to ensure that your night sleep is stress-free") with locally-produced anchors: multi-grain or gluten-free breads, eggs prepared to order with cherry tomatoes and Greek olive oil, Greek yoghurt with honey, the locally-produced orange cake (specifically called out in guest reviews), Cycladic cheese plateaux including Syros's famous San Michali ΠΟΠ cheese, fresh tomatoes, capers, seasonal fruit, and freshly-squeezed orange juice. Breakfast can be delivered to the suite at no extra charge. The light lunch service operates from 13:00 to 19:00 with salads, bruschetta, and small plates with local Cycladic cheese and cured-meat platters. For dinner, the property arranges free delivery from beach tavernas until 20:00, or guests walk down to Kini's beachfront restaurant circuit. The Pino Bar runs the signature Konstantinos Vasilakopoulos cocktail programme alongside local craft beers, Greek wines, and the bar's daytime-into-evening social programme.
The wellness programme anchors at WellnesT — the property's by-appointment wellness service. 5 distinct massage types are available (essential oils or hot stones, with the wellness team scheduling private or small-group sessions), alongside yoga and Pilates (private or group, all levels), Aqua Fitness lessons (in the main pool), and manicure and pedicure services. The standout WellnesT offering is the private Wellness Corner with Jacuzzi — bookable exclusively for 2 hours by 2 people at €200, with champagne and fruit included. The corner functions as the property's private romance amenity, anchoring honeymoon and anniversary bookings.
The wider Syros circuit runs from the property via the property's concierge service. The Hermoupolis Heritage Routes programme (recently launched) carries three curated experiences: The Looms (a private night tour at the one and only textile factory in Hermoupolis), The Lighthouse (a boat trip in the waves of tradition to explore the first lighthouse of Greece), and The Members' Club (a road tour to Syros's traditional inland villages, learning about the first Club of Greece). Additional concierge-arranged experiences include horse riding at the Equestrian Club of the Cyclades, boat tours from Kini Beach to the wild northern beaches, scuba diving with qualified instructors, hiking across the Syros trail network, windsurfing at the Syros Windsurf School, water sports at Komito Beach, wine tastings at the property's premises or at the wineries of Syros, and the broader Syros gastronomy and cultural circuit. Ermoupoli (15 minutes from the property) is the cultural anchor with the neoclassical architecture, Apollon Theatre, Catholic upper town of Ano Syros, and the famous Syros wineries.
The property operates as a wedding-capable venue — the family's Your Special Moments programme handles proposals, intimate weddings, vow renewals, and small gatherings, with whole-property rental or single-suite booking required depending on event scope. The property doesn't operate as event planners but works with external planners to deliver ceremonies on the property terraces facing the Aegean sunset.
Worth booking for: honeymooners and anniversary travellers attracted to BHC's Europe's Best Romantic Retreat 2022 award-winner; couples drawn to the 2 X_ecutive Suites with outdoor private plunge mini-pools facing the Aegean; design-conscious travellers attracted to the Coco-Mat-and-Korres-and-Guy-Laroche premium-amenity programming; adults-only travellers (15+) prioritising the family-home operation rather than chain-affiliated alternatives; cultural travellers attracted to the 150-year Rigouzzo family heritage anchor and the deep cultural ties to Syros's French-consular history; multi-day Syros visitors prioritising the hillside-above-Kini position with quick beach village access and Ermoupoli's Cycladic cultural anchor 15 minutes away; intimate wedding parties using the Your Special Moments programme for proposals, vow renewals or minimonies; pet owners (verified pet-friendly policy); travellers wanting a genuinely off-the-cosmopolitan-circuit Cycladic alternative to Mykonos and Santorini. Less so for: families with younger children (adults-only 15+); travellers wanting direct beachfront accommodation (Pino di Loto is hillside, a 5-minute walk down to Kini beach); guests seeking large hotel amenities or scale (the property operates 6 suites only — every booking is intimate by design); cosmopolitan-nightlife travellers (Syros's nightlife concentration is in Ermoupoli 15 minutes away; Kini is a quiet beach village); guests wanting an on-property full-service dinner programme (the property's dinner offering is via taverna delivery or village walk-down — no on-site dinner service); winter travellers (verify seasonal operation — many Cycladic properties reduce off-season operation).
