Origins
Rockfig Lodge was founded over 20 years ago by Andrew Walker, who originally built the Inkwe family house as a home-from-home.
In 2019, Andrew opened the place into the beautiful game lodge it is today.
Now run by Sarika Ramjee and Andrew Walker’s family, the lodge continues its legacy of offering a unique and immersive safari experience. Rockfig is thoroughly deserving of all the warm praise and accolades it receives from previous guests lucky enough to have visited.
Top Secret
An underground hide situated next to the Rockfig watering hole where you can experience the thrill of seeing zebra, elephant and impala up-close.
‘The Cliff’ is a perfect spot to watch the sunset over the magical Madikwe plains and is a famed place for an impromptu or planned proposal (!)
The Review
Having visited Madikwe before, we were excited to return and experience Rockfig Lodge which has received almost flawless reviews from previous guests. It would be a disservice to Rockfig to simply state that it met these expectations as they were overwhelmingly surpassed.
On arrival, we were treated to a welcome drink and immediately whisked into a waiting vehicle to embark on our first game drive. Driving around Madikwe Game Reserve at sunset is an unforgettable experience. Not only does the park retain a sense of exclusivity through strict restrictions in numbers, but it also boasts a huge variety of wildlife including of course the ‘big five’. Rockfig had thought of everything… from the well-stocked drinks and nibbles (think kudu biltong!) to the knowledgeable guide and comfortable driving experience, we truly had an unforgettable time. Worth noting is that if you have a particular request for the game drive (sunset, particular bird, predator or botanical gin!!), Rockfig will do its utmost to make this possible for you.
Despite Madikwe being a relatively remote reserve, we were amazed by the quality and variety of culinary delights on offer at Rockfig. Jessica the chef is a great believer in using natural and raw ingredients to make both first class local and international cuisine. Particular highlights included the ostrich carpaccio, chocolate brownies topped with avocado icing and the amazing brai that featured no less than 10 different dishes including stews, curries, salads, local sausages and fish.
One of the other things we loved about Rockfig was the perfect experiential balance between intimacy and sociability. The villas themselves are totally secluded, but during the game drives and dinners, we were able to share experiences with other visitors, such as the communal brai, sun-downers and of course the world-famous pizza night! Outside of the game drives and first-class meals, we could enjoy the luxuries of the villa without disturbance and in perfect privacy.
Overall, if we were forced to pick a ‘top safari’ experience, it would be our recent stay at Rockfig Madikwe. The staff should be proud of creating a place with a relaxed but luxurious atmosphere and a perfect balance between intimacy and top-quality personalized service.
