Origins
The Ubud Village Resort grew out of one man's bet on a then-quiet corner of Ubud. Two decades ago, when Agus Wiyasa Pande announced plans to build a hotel beside the Monkey Forest, his ambitions were thought far-fetched for so sleepy an area. He started small, driving guests around himself while his wife cooked the meals; as both Ubud and the business grew — the Monkey Forest is now the area's most visited sight — he opened the larger Village Resort and Spa in 2006, a short way from the village.
The resort is laid out in the form of a traditional Balinese village, 30 private-pool villas spread across 14 acres, and built on the principle of Tri Hita Karana — harmony with nature, with the gods, and with people — that underpins Balinese life. The villas are generously sized and traditionally styled: sunken baths strewn with petals on arrival, showers open to the sky among temple stone, lily ponds encircling the buildings, and a raised bale pavilion for private dining beside each pool.
The design keeps its relationship with the landscape front and centre. Rice terraces cascade through the grounds beneath a semi-circular infinity pool, and at night Balinese lanterns light the fields beyond the villas. The setting is the draw, but so is the position: this is Nyuh Kuning, the artists' village by the Monkey Forest on Ubud's southern edge, close enough to walk or take the shuttle into the centre for the markets, temples and restaurants, yet quiet and green once you are back. It is romantic by temperament — the petal baths and candlelit dinners are the house signatures — though comfortable enough for families too.
Top Secret
The resort was built without felling a single established tree. The design was laid out around them instead, so mature trunks turn up in unexpected places across the grounds — in some cases rising straight through a guest villa. It is the clearest expression of the Tri Hita Karana principle the place is built on, and a small thing most guests notice with pleasure only once they have arrived.

The Review
The Ubud Village Resort & Spa is a romantic all-villa resort a short walk from the Monkey Forest, and it stands out for two things: the village-style layout and the genuine sense of place behind it. Built in 2006 by a local hotelier on the Balinese principle of Tri Hita Karana, it spreads 30 private-pool villas across 14 acres of gardens and rice terraces, laid out to echo a traditional Balinese community rather than a conventional resort.
The villas are the strong suit — large, traditionally styled, each with a private pool, a sunken petal-strewn bath, indoor and outdoor showers and a dining pavilion — and the grounds, with their cascading rice terraces and lantern-lit paddies at night, are genuinely lovely. Service draws consistent praise, breakfast is an à-la-carte affair that changes daily, and small touches such as the candlelit Balinese Romance dinner lean into the resort's romantic, honeymoon-friendly character. The two-storey DAVA Spa is well regarded, if priced above the spas in town.
The trade-off is location nuance rather than remoteness: Nyuh Kuning is walkable to central Ubud but not in the thick of it, and the free shuttle does the rest, which suits couples after greenery and quiet over a step-out-the-door address. For a romantic, characterful villa stay within reach of Ubud's culture — and at a gentler rate than the Sayan-gorge names — it is among the more appealing choices on this side of town.
