Expert Review
Origins
When Agus Wiyasa Pande announced two decades ago his plans to build a hotel adjacent to the Monkey Forrest, people laughed at his lofty ambitions for the quiet Ubud area. Initially driving guests around himself whilst his wife cooked meals, both Ubud and the hotel have since prospered. The Monkey Forrest has since become the most popular destination in the region, and Agus opened his new Village Resort and Spa in 2006, in more spacious surroundings, a short drive from the village.
Top Secret
The resort was built without chopping down any established trees, leaving guests to find them in the most unexpected locations, even inside their rooms.
The Review
Just minutes away from the enchanting Ubud Monkey Forrest, the Ubud Village Resort and Spa offers guests a haven of luxury and tranquillity in the cultural centre of Bali. Covering 14 acres for only 30 villas, the boutique resort is built on the Balinese principle of ‘Tri Hita Karana’ – ‘harmony with nature, harmony with the Gods and harmony with the people’.
Achieving this manifesto whilst offering true indulgence is an impressive feat and one pulled off with aplomb. The resort’s palatial villas are set out in modern design with strong traditional themes. When not unwinding in the private pool or dining in the accompanying raised balé, guests can seek their own harmonies with ease – showering under the sun whilst surrounded by temple stone, or soaking in the sunken bath at the isthmus formed by the lily-ponds encircling the villa. The same bath is topped with petals on arrival to greet the weary traveller – a welcome as warm as the Ubud people.
The design of the resort celebrates its relationship with the world around it. Rice terraces cascade through the property, overlooked by the central semi-circular infinity pool, and at night, Balinese lanterns stretch out beyond the margins of the ‘village’, illuminating the fields beyond. The activities and adventures of the local landscape –with its volcano to trek, and mountains down which to bike - should keep even the most active soul busy, and the pampering spa awaits those whose journey is rather more spiritual.
