Introducing Indonesia

Most countries have a single front door. Indonesia has thousands, and the one nearly everyone walks through is Bali — which can make it easy to forget that Bali is a small Hindu island in the world's largest Muslim nation, one province among thirty-eight, a single bright thread in a weave that runs four thousand miles west to east. That scale is hard to hold in the head. Sumatra alone could swallow several European countries; between the islands lie some of the richest seas on earth.

Bali earns its fame honestly, though. More than anywhere else in the archipelago, it puts the best of Indonesia within easy reach: temples that still run the calendar, rice terraces cut by hand into river valleys, volcanoes you can climb before breakfast, and a standard of independent hotel-keeping that rewards the long flight. It is where almost all of our Indonesian collection sits, and for good reason — few islands anywhere repay a week so generously.

What you give up, choosing Bali, is everything else: the Buddhist colossus of Borobudur on Java, the Komodo dragons and coral walls of the eastern islands, the orangutans of Sumatra and Borneo. None of it is a first trip for most visitors, but all of it explains why people who come once tend to come back. Start with Bali. The archipelago will still be there.

The South: Beaches and Energy

Our Indonesian collection has a clear centre: Bali. The island carries almost every property we list here, and the single most useful thing to understand before booking is that Bali is really three places, each suited to a different kind of trip.

The southern beaches — Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu, Sanur, Jimbaran — are where Bali is busiest and easiest. This is the side built for surf, sunset bars, good restaurants and a short hop from the airport, and it carries the broadest mix of places to stay: clifftop villa resorts above the Indian Ocean, gated beachside enclaves, and several of the island's women-only wellness houses. Choose the south for energy and access, not for quiet.

Ubud: The Cultural Heart

Inland, in the central hills, Ubud is the reason many people fall for Bali. Rice terraces drop into jungle gorges, temple ceremonies spill into the streets, and the days bend towards craft, yoga and slow food. It holds the richest and most varied part of our collection — adults-only jungle villas, design-led resorts, plant-based wellness houses — and rewards anyone who cares more about culture and landscape than beach. It is also the best base for the island's galleries, markets and walks.

The Highlands and East: For the Long Stay

The further you go from the south, the quieter and stranger Bali gets. North into the coffee highlands the air cools and the crowds vanish; east, under the volcano Gunung Agung, lies the island's royal coast, where the grandest of our properties steps down a hillside to a black-sand shore. These are not places to pass through — the drives are long and the rewards are scenery, calm and a sense of the island as it was. Pair them with Ubud or the south, and give them time.
