Expert Review
Origins
Hidden Hills Villas began as a passion project by a Swiss mother and son, Beatrice and Max. Beatrice, who spent more than two decades in the art world, conceived the idea that gives the resort its character: each villa designed around a different country meaningful to the family — Santorini, Marrakesh, Tokyo, Persia and more — so that every villa has its own identity, look and atmosphere rather than the uniformity of a hotel.
It has grown over the years to 15 villas, studios up to a five-bedroom, most with private pools, with eight studio villas added in 2021. The resort is family-owned and run, which shows in the personal, design-led feel and the close attention of the service. It sits high on the Uluwatu cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula, set back off the road and genuinely hard to find, with 180-degree views over the Indian Ocean from villas that frame the sea between infinity pool and sky.
Dining is a real strength. The Hidden Gem restaurant and wine lounge serves California-and-Asian-inspired cooking with one of the largest by-the-glass wine lists in Bali, curated by a qualified sommelier, and the resort chef will also cook privately in your villa — the seafood barbecue in your own garden is the one to book. There is a spa, a gym and a pool, and Uluwatu's beaches, surf breaks, clifftop temple and beach clubs are minutes away. The Bukit is the fastest-changing corner of southern Bali, which is part of the appeal and, with construction around, occasionally part of the trade-off.
Top Secret
Book the private dinner. Ask your butler to set up the four-course in-villa dinner in your own garden, and the staff will lay a romantic table among the lanterns — best started with a cocktail timed for sunset over the ocean. It is the kind of thing the resort does particularly well, and on a clifftop this quiet, dining at home rather than going out is often the better evening.

The Review
Hidden Hills Villas is the most design-led of the Bali properties we list, and the reason is its concept: 15 villas, each built around a different country meaningful to the Swiss mother-and-son family who own and run it, so a stay here is as much about which villa as which resort. It sits high on the Uluwatu cliffs, family-owned and personal in a way the bigger villa resorts are not.
The setting does much of the work — 180-degree ocean views, infinity pools framing the sea, a clifftop position set so far off the road the resort cannot be seen from it. Dining is a genuine draw, with the Hidden Gem restaurant and its unusually deep by-the-glass wine list, and private in-villa dinners that suit the quiet of the place. Service is close and attentive, as family-run places tend to be.
Two honest notes. The Bukit is developing fast, and the resort is open that nearby construction can mean occasional daytime noise — worth asking about when you book. And while beaches and surf are minutes away, this is a clifftop, not a beachfront, resort. For couples who want a private, design-led villa with a view and a serious wine list, in Bali's most happening southern corner, Hidden Hills stands apart.
