Origins
Kayumanis Ubud is an all-villa resort built into the jungle above the Ayung River at Sayan, the wooded gorge west of Ubud that is Bali's most coveted address for a stay like this. The name means cinnamon in Indonesian, and the spice runs quietly through the place — in the scent of the homemade products, even in cinnamon-stick pens and spoons — a small sign of how far the attention to detail goes.
There are just 23 villas spread across two and a half hectares, and the spacing is the point: doors cut into stone walls open onto private courtyards, each villa with its own pool, outdoor lounge and poolside kitchen, and interconnecting jungle paths that mean you can stay for days and barely glimpse another guest. The villas run from 300 to 700 square metres, the bathrooms are entirely open-air, and every villa comes with a 24-hour butler. It is adults-only, and built for privacy above all.
What sets it apart from the many villa resorts of Ubud is partly the seclusion and partly the all-in approach: breakfast at any hour brought to the villa, afternoon tea, the minibar, homemade snacks and a car into Ubud are all simply included, with none of the usual nickel-and-diming. The spa, in thatched pavilions over the river, is among the loveliest in Ubud, and the resort is run largely by long-serving local staff who have risen through its ranks. It is owned by Kayumanis, a small Indonesian group with three other Bali villa resorts and two in China, but it feels entirely particular to its patch of forest.
Top Secret
Try the rosella. The deep-red drink served at the spa and restaurant is made from fresh hibiscus flowers, and it is the house refreshment worth seeking out. While you are at the spa, note the small thing that sets it apart: the treatment bed is gently warmed from beneath, so the usual chill of lying still through a scrub or massage simply never arrives. It is typical of a place that has thought through the details most resorts overlook.

The Review
Kayumanis Ubud is among the most private luxury stays in Ubud, and privacy is precisely its design. Spread across two and a half hectares of jungle above the Ayung at Sayan, it is made up of just 23 villas, each walled into its own courtyard with a private pool, an outdoor lounge and an open-air bathroom, and linked by forest paths arranged so that you rarely encounter anyone else. For couples after seclusion — it is adults-only — there are few places in Bali that deliver it so completely.
The villas are large and beautifully done, but what guests remember is the service and the all-in ethos: a 24-hour butler, breakfast brought whenever you wake, afternoon tea, minibar and a car into Ubud all included, with no hidden extras. The spa, in thatched pavilions over the river, is a highlight in its own right, and small touches — the cinnamon that gives the place its name running through everything, the warmed spa bed, the homemade rosella — show a level of care above the Ubud norm.
It is worth knowing the shape of a stay here. This is a place for slowing down, not a base for the town: Sayan is a ten-minute drive from central Ubud, and the all-villa seclusion that makes it special also means it is quiet, inward-looking and best suited to a romantic two-to-four nights rather than a sightseeing hub. Taken on those terms — privacy, service and a riverside-jungle setting done at a high level — Kayumanis Ubud is among the most desirable villa retreats in Bali.
