Introducing Koh Samui

Koh Samui is Thailand's most quietly grown-up island. It has an international airport, which spares you the boat transfers of its neighbours; it has a coastline varied enough to hold a full-blown resort strip and a string of near-empty bays within half an hour of each other; and it has spent thirty years learning how to do luxury without losing the coconut plantations that still cover its interior. The result is an island that works as well for a honeymoon as for a family reunion, and knows it.

The shorthand is simple. The east coast, Chaweng and Lamai, is where the action is: the best beaches, the most restaurants, the nightlife. The north and the quieter corners are where the private villas hide, on their own bays, behind their own gates, staffed and self-contained. And because Samui sits in the Gulf, it keeps its best weather for the middle of the year, when the Andaman coast on the other side of the country is under cloud.

Our Samui collection leans heavily towards the villa end of the market, the staffed, private, book-the-whole-thing kind. Below, where they are, and when to come.

Koh Samui Guide

Where to stay in Koh Samui

Samui divides into its busy east coast, its quieter north, and the quiet south, and our collection is spread deliberately across all three. Villas dominate, but the settings vary widely.

Chaweng and the east coast

Chaweng is Samui's main event: the longest, best beach on the island, a couple of miles of white sand, backed by the busiest concentration of restaurants, bars and shops. Its quieter southern curve, Chaweng Noi, is separated by a headland and calmer for it. This is where you stay to be in the thick of things, and where two of our villas make the most of the address. Villa Mia is a staffed beachfront estate of three villas at the quiet northern end of Chaweng, bookable singly or together, with the beach on one side and the restaurants a short ride away. Up in the hills above Chaweng Noi, Villa Moonshadow takes the opposite tack: an architect-designed four-bedroom villa with an infinity pool and a 180-degree sweep of sea, private, elevated and completely calm.

Lamai and the quieter east

South of Chaweng, over the headland, Lamai is the island's second beach and a gentler proposition, a little cheaper, a little more local, with the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations at its southern end.Ammatara Pura sits on a quiet stretch of Lamai sand, an intimate resort of eighteen private-pool villas built in an ornate, palace-style Thai design, with the warm, family-run service that is its real signature and the town a couple of minutes' walk away.

The north and Thongson Bay

The north coast is quieter than the east and handy for the airport and the Big Buddha. Around Choeng Mon and Thongson Bay, the beaches shrink to intimate coves and the mood softens. Melati Beach Resort & Spa occupies its own bay here, a beachfront resort of seventy-seven rooms and pool villas built around a waterfall lobby, with a spa and a broad stretch of private sand, an easy, full-service base a short hop from the airport.

The quiet south

The south and south-west of the island are the least developed parts, a landscape of coconut groves, fishing villages and small private bays that the resort strip never reached. Villa Kalyana has one of these to itself: an exclusive-use, twenty-six-bedroom beachfront estate on its own bay, fully staffed and privately chefed, built for a big group or an extended family that wants the run of a private beach. It is the island at its most private, and its most all-in.

What to do

Beyond the beach, Samui repays a day or two of exploring. See the Big Buddha and the Wat Plai Laem temple in the north-east; take a longtail out to the Ang Thong Marine Park, the archipelago of limestone islands that inspired The Beach; and drive the ring road inland to the Na Muang waterfalls and the coconut country of the interior. The Fisherman's Village at Bophut, an old Chinese-Thai trading street of wooden shophouses now full of restaurants, is the best place on the island for dinner and a wander, especially on Friday market night.

When to go

Samui keeps a different calendar from Thailand's Andaman coast. The best, driest weather runs from around December to August, with the peak of the dry season in the middle of the year, exactly when Phuket is wet. The wettest, roughest stretch is October to December, when the north-east monsoon can bring heavy rain and choppy seas. For the finest weather, and the trade-off of higher prices, aim for the January-to-April window, or the middle of the year for value and reliable sun.
